  1. Install os on external drive to test laptop

I have a Samsung laptop but I would like to build a with Windows 10 however it seems like there is no hard drive in the machine as when I try to boot nothing happens and when I looked in the bios I do not see a hard drive connected

Is it possible to install the os on an external hard drive connect it to the laptop by USB and boot from that so as to test what the machine is like and if I feel it's worth keeping and then I would install a hard drive inside it

This laptop was given to me by a friend and he has never used it hence why we don't know whether it works but it's an I5 and her 6 gig of RAM so I think it's worth a try

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

Laptop hard drive won't let me install OS

No Bro! Never! If I were in your shoes, I'd go and borrow someone's external dvd drive to see if I can install my OS through this. My hunch really is that the laptop's dvd drive is starting to fail already. I had this similar situation with my laptop and fianlly removed the dvd drive and installed an external drive instead. Problem fixed!*Big Grin Install os on external drive to test laptop :D Mind you, mine would never go beyond 12% when installing XP!*Eek! Install os on external drive to test laptop
Or, I would follow Mussel's guide to installing the OS using Flash drive (USB).
Hope you find the solution Bro!*Toast :toast:

    External drive

    Hi Richard,

There are several factors that can cause your external drive to not read DVDs even though the system is recognizing the device. This could be caused by a driver that needs to updated or corrupted files. For us to resolve your concern, kindly answer the questions
    below:

    • Just to confirm, the device that is not working properly is a external DVD optical drive?
    • Were there any recent changes or updates installed on your computer?
    • Have you tried to plug the external drive to a different port on your computer?

As a initial recommendation, we suggest that your run the built in troubleshooter in Windows 10. Kindly refer to the steps below:

    • Type “Troubleshooting” in the Search bar and press Enter.
    • Click on “View All” in the top left corner.
    • This will display the list of troubleshooters which are built-in in the computer. You can click on
Hardware and Devices from the list and you can run the troubleshooter.

This will check for common errors that affect hardware on your computer and attempts to correct them.

We look forward to your response after completing the steps.
