Windows 10: WUAUSERV completely missing from registry, services, and system

Noticed Windows Defender was not working correctly and decided to look into the problem. As I dug deeper I noticed that the Windows Update feature was not working correctly either. Each piece of advice revolved around the solution of start/stopping wuauserv, but as I checked the registry and services.msc, the wuauserv entry/service is not present. It's as if it has been completely removed from the system - thus making any solution of start/stopping null and void.


I need to reinstall this service and just need to be pushed in the right direction. System has been scanned/cleaned of malware, so I have a clean slate to start. Please help.

Upon analyzing the details and the troubleshooting steps you have done so far, we suggest that you
manually reset your Windows Update Components
by following these
troubleshooting steps:

• 
  Run
  Command Prompt as Administrator
  
• 
  Stop
  BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and Windows Update Services. To do this,
  type the following command:
  
  • 
    Net stop wuauserv
    
  • 
    Net stop cryptSvc
    
  • 
    Net stop bits
    
  • 
    Net stop msiserver
    
• 
  Rename
  SoftwareDistribution
  and
  Catroot2
  folder. To do this, type the following commands:
  
  • 
    Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    
  • 
    Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
    
• 
  Restart
  BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and Windows Update Services. To do this,
  type the following command:
  
  • 
    Net start wuauserv
    
  • 
    Net start cryptSvc
    
  • 
    Net start bits
    
  • 
    Net start msiserver
    
• 
  Restart
  your computer and try to
  install Windows Update.

Cannot stop wuauserv service(windows update service)

Trying for 3rd time to install the Windows 10 anniversary update on an older Satellite and got stuck not downloading or installing the update.

Same problem as many others from Microsoft Community: Windows Update stuck; general solution is to stop Update Service ([bits &] wuauserv, and optionally many more operations) and restart it. Also, as others, could not stop wuauserv;

The Windows Update service could not be stopped.

C:\Windows\system32>net stop wuauserv

The service is starting or stopping. Please try again later.

...

BUT NOTHING RESOLVED WHY wuauserv COULD NOT BE STOPPED. As suggested in
Windows 10 update stuck at 0%, changed wuauserv to automatic mode in Services and after a lot of time and restarts I got the anniversary update 1607!
