  1. opening backup files from a jump drive

I backed up files from a computer that won't boot using the onscreen Microsoft instruction, and I want to open them on another computer to be sure they are all there before I do a complete restore on the one that won't boot.

No matter how long I look, I can't find out how to open my backup files from a jump drive. Before I did the backup the computer instructed me to format the jump drive as NTFS but now I don't know how to retrieve them.

    :)

  2. USB jump drive won't work in windows 10 professional; says disk is write protected; jump drive was formatted exFAT prior

    Hello Martha,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We regret the inconvenience caused and will assist you in resolving the issue.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

    • Did you check if similar issue persists on connecting other jump drives on the computer?
    • Did you make any other changes apart from formatting the jump drive to
      exFat
      format prior to the issue?

You might be facing the above issue due to the Read only option selected on the jump drive connected to the PC.

I suggest you to check if similar issue persists on connecting other USB drives on the PC. If the issue does not persist, I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.

    • Connect the jump drive to the computer and open File explorer by pressing
Windows logo + X keys on the keyboard.
    • Click on This PC from the left side panel of the window and right click on the jump drive shown under
      Disks & Drives.
    • Select Properties from the context menu and uncheck
      Read only
      if marked.
    • Click on Yes when the option saying Apply changes to subfolders and files writing to this folder pops.
    • Click on Apply and OK on the same window.
    • Close the window, check if the changes are effective by unplugging and re-plugging the jump drive on the computer.

If the issue persists, is suggest you to contact the jump drive manufacturer’s support for further assistance.

Write to us with answers to the above questions and the status of the issue on the same post for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.

    Microsoft Office Taskbar Jump Lists

    Hi Ken,

For us to better assist you with the taskbar Jump Lists issue, we'd like to know the following:

    • Were there any changes made to the computer prior to this issue (e.g. Windows updates)?
    • Does the issue also occur on other pinned apps/files?

In the meantime, we suggest to turn off/on Jump Lists in Settings. To do so, please follow the steps below:

    • Press Windows key + i to open Settings, then select
      Personalization.
    • In the left pane, click Start.
    • Turn Off then turn On Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on the Start or the taskbar.

We're looking forward to your reply.
