Windows 10: Black screen of death and dispair

Hi fellow members, I am a local idiot with an issue with my PC.


It started a few years ago when my computer started freezing (black screen with the console turning off completely and monitor saying it's going in power save mode)

That issue came along with disk usage going up to 100% any time a program was opened. I tried disabling superfetch and many other things, etcetc. But nothing worked. It seemed the drive was corrupt, because I used a drive program and it said there was a "sector error"

So, we got a new drive, an SSD. Everything was good for a few months. Then, it started freezing again. It was random. One day it would freeze like 5 times ans another day it wouldn't freeze at all.


The same thing happened but this time its worse. Windows will no longer update, windows security center is disabled and it won't let me enable it, and it occasionally gets slow.


I used the same program only this time there were no sector errors. CPU or Disk kept going up to 100% randomly. I tried the superfetch and disabling windows update, using regedit to change the value to 4, uninstalling programs, auto memory trimmer, etc. And it only made the freezing worse. It used to only freeze when I had 2 instances of Steam, now it freezes when I open a simple defrag program and run the process.


As a last resort, I went ahead and tried to shrink my drive so I could make a 2nd one since there is a crap ton of spare space on it, I tried to shrink, but all I got was an error. I googled it and they suggested I try it in safe mode. So I did it. Now it's in a permanent black screen and there's nothing ever showing up on the monitor. No logo, no cursor, just black. I tried putting the windows installation media in (a disk ) it spins around in it, you can hear it, the lights on the computer block is still on, screen still black. Idk what to do and I'm no expert can someone help?

Windows 7 black screen of death

I read a report a little while ago that said the black screens were nothing to do with updates but due to a malicious program (it hit more than just windows 7 users - vista, xp and 2000 were also prone to the black startup screen of death if infected). My windows 7 install is fully up-to-date and i've never had the black startup screen.

Just run some decent anti virus and you should be safe (i suggest microsoft security essentails since it's free and pretty decent). When you've installed an anti-virus i'd suggest doing a full scen to be sure there's nothing there.
