BSOD or computer restarts as soon as I plug in my Xbox one controller via USB. Have tried...

As the title says, my computer either BSODs or restarts when I plug in my Xbox one controller via USB. BSOD says "Page Fault In Nonpaged Area" with xboxgip.sys as the fault, but most of the time when I plug the controller in, it just causes my computer to restart without the BSOD. I've tried sfc /scannow and DISM check health and both found no issues as well as uninstalling/reinstalling xboxgip.sys driver.

I've tried resetting Windows, disabling all applications (task manager > startup) as well as non Microsoft services (msconfig > services tab) on startup and my computer still restarts/BSOD after plugging in the controller.

PC Specs (it says I have an i7 7700, but I have an i7-9700K)

    Thanks!

    :)

  2. Xbox 360 Wired Controller

Thank you for your response. We would like to verify if you have tried to plug the controller into a different USB port on your computer.

The Xbox 360 Controller for Windows needs a powered USB port. If the controller is not working correctly, try changing it to a different USB port. Avoid using USB hubs or the front ports on a PC. Unpowered hubs or ports might not provide enough power
to the controller. For best results, plug the controller into another USB port on the back of the computer.

Typically, the ports on the back of a computer are powered ports. Ports on the front of the computer may not be powered ports. An external USB hub doesn’t provide powered ports if it doesn’t have its own separate power supply or AC adapter.

Since the issue started after an update, you can uninstall Windows Updates from your computer by following the steps below:

    • Click Start and go to Settings.
    • Go to Update & security.
    • Under the Check for updates button, click Update History.
    • Select Uninstall updates.
    • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

This process will only allow you to remove updates that Windows has installed since installing the previous build.

Make sure that your controller is calibrated by following the steps on this
    link
    .

Keep us updated with the results after performing the suggested solutions above.

  3. Xbox one controller suddenly not working with Windows 10

    Problem description:

    - Xbox One controller now listed in Device Manager as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)"

    - I get the following "USB device not recognized" notification when connecting Xbox One controller:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/1241-73-device-connected-computer-malfunctioned

    Troubleshooting steps taken:

    - Restart computer multiple times

    - Try with 2 additional USB cables

    - Try all 3 cables in different USB slots

    - Uninstall controller in Device Manager, then reconnected controller. Devices is re-added with same error message:

"Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)"

    Observations:

    - When I tried plugging controller into the keyboard's built in USB sockets, it caused the keyboard and mouse to suddenly stop working and appear to power down until restart.

    - This controller has never had this problem on this device in the past, and has previous worked perfectly with all 3 cables I used in testing.

Any additional troubleshooting steps you can suggest? Thanks in advance.

Xbox One Controller Wired Connection Registers as Generic Controller

    Hi Trey,

Using a micro-USB cable is one way on how you can connect your Xbox One Controller to a Windows 10 PC. Once connected, it will install the most current drivers needed for your controller. Regarding your concern, have you tried using another micro-USB
cable? If not, we suggest that you uninstall first the current driver for your Xbox One Controller on your computer, restart, and then connect the controller using another USB cable.
There's a possibility that it affects the computer to get the correct driver for your controller.

If your Xbox One Controller still treated as the generic controller, we recommend that you manually install the driver by performing the following steps:

    • Press Windows Key + X and choose Device Manager from the list.
    • Once Device Manager opens, locate and right-click Xbox One Controller.
    • From the menu choose Update Driver Software.
    • Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
    • Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
    • Locate Microsoft Xbox One Controller on the list and click
      Next
to install it. If you can’t locate Microsoft Xbox One Controller driver, you might have to uncheck
      Show compatible hardware option.

Let us know if that works for you.
