    I just got a new WD 1TB external hard drive and I wanted to create a backup for my PC on it. I figured the easiest way would be to create a system image, so I went to Control Panel, Backup and Restore and proceeded through the steps up to where it starts to backup to my new hard drive. After a few minutes, about half way through the backup, it stops and I get the message that the backup had failed.

    The dialog box always shows error code 0x807800c5, but also included error code 0x8078004F under the additional information. I also went through the directories that ended up on my hard drive, and looked at the logs that it kept for the backup error. Each one says the same thing which is "Backup of volume \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume4\ has failed. The mounted backup volume is inaccessible. Please retry the operation."


    After reading through different posts about the same thing I still wasn't sure so I reached out to Tech Support, but all they had me do was do a Clean Boot. I still have all except Microsoft services disabled at the moment and continue to get the error. Even though my hard drive was already formatted as NTFS I did a quick format to NTFS again since there was nothing on it anyway, and that didn't do anything. I am still new to a lot of this, so I am not sure what else to do.


    I am running Windows 10 Home, Build 17134.648 if that helps any.

    You might want to try:
    1. Click on Start button (1). Hold down SHIFT KEY+Click On Power (2) then click on Restart(3)

    2. The PC will reboot and get into the Recovery Environment
    3. Click on Trouble Shoot->Advanced Options->System Restore.

    Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.


    Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

    How do I get Windows 10 backup to stop trying to backup D:?

    Thanks for your suggestion. I disabled the device and ran the backup and it completed successfully. I then enabled the device again and ran the backup again but it did not complete successfully.

    Your reply gave me an effective workaround but it means I will need to disable and enable as an extra step whenever I need to do a backup. A future fix from Microsoft would be desirable.
