  1. BitLocker problem

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing you regarding a major problem in using the BitLocker feature in Windows 10 pro. I have a HP ProBook 440 G5 4QW84EA and my SSD has two partitions – C for the system and programs and D for the documents. I had to (completely) reinstall the windows on C partition and, while the programs and drivers were reinstalled, I wanted to activate the BitLocker feature for the D partition. And here the problems began. When I activated BitLocker (right-click on D partition, left-click on BitLocker), I had only to confirm the administrator rights on the pop-up. I didn’t know it is supposed to save a key somewhere. After that, I updated the TPM driver from 1.2 to 2.0, because I updated all the drivers using Device Manager. At some point, I had to restart the laptop, and, after the restart, the D partition appeared as blocked. When I tried to open the documents, a pop-up asking for the 48-digits key appeared. I searched on the internet about where this key can be found:

    - I had an USB inserted in my laptop, but it wasn’t anything there (including hidden files).

    - When I installed the windows on my system, I avoided to put the Microsoft account, so the password couldn’t go to OneDrive in cloud.

    - I searched on C drive for files having the required extension or the first digits. With manage-bde get I see only the name file, the key is hidden (of course, this is the facility).

    - I searched in the print queue, but that was empty.

On another laptop, I tried to repeat the same steps, but there appeared the proper pop-up to store the key somewhere. So, I think this can be a bug, a very unpleasant one.

I don’t know how to find that password and I hope there is a solution to recover my documents. I searched on internet for recovery solutions, but all of them require having the key. However, if I delete the partition and try a utility like TestDisk or Recuva, the recovered files are still encrypted, right? Because this is supposed to do by BitLocker.

    Thank you and Best regards,

    Teodor Rotaru

    problem with bitlocker

    Hi Roeslie,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We need some more details to help you find the solution to your problem.

    • Which edition of Windows 10 is installed on your surface machine?
    • Did you notice any changes on the computer recently?
    • When you say, you have a problem with your Surface machine about BitLocker key, do you mean that the surface machine asks you to enter the BitLocker key to allow you to sign into Windows?
    • Does the other computer ask you to enter the BitLocker key to allow you to access the files saved on it?

If you are being asked to enter a BitLocker key to sign into your surface machine and you don’t remember your BitLocker key, you can follow the instructions given in the link below to find the BitLocker recovery key.

We suggest doing the following steps again to resolve the issue. To complete the procedure, make sure that you have the following information:

    • Click Start, click Control Panel, click
System and Security, and then click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
    • Click Suspend Protection for the operating system drive.
    • A message is displayed, informing you that your data will not be protected while BitLocker is suspended and asking if you want to suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption.
