  1. Microsoft/Live account not able to access network shares

    Hi,

I have 4 PCs in a home network and an trying to arrange to share between them. Two have Windows 10 Pro, two have Windows 10 Home and all 4 are fully updated. All have two user accounts set up - one admin, one standard. Both user accounts are set up as Microsoft accounts.

The admin account can share across the network without issue. For the standard account, three of them have no problem sharing and are working as expected. The fourth can see the other computers in the network but can't access them. Attempting to access them pops a prompt for a username/password. Putting in the Microsoft account details does not allow access.

    I have:

    - verified the account

    - reviewed Windows credentials

    - deleted and recreated the user

    - ensured network discovery is on and synced settings in the network and sharing centre

    - restarted, restarted again, shut down and restarted etc.

    - unshared and reshared

The problem PC has just had Windows installed from scratch so it's as clean a build as you could ask for.

I understand i could turn off password protected sharing and that would probably fix this but I'd porter to avoid this.

Any tips, links or help would be greatly appreciated

    Dan

    :)

  2. DTG1 Win User

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.

  3. Cannot access shared network drive

I could scream! so much time wasted on this stupid error, as if time is not precious enough!
It probably would work fine if I could see the other computer! But I cannot see the other computer!

  4. Microsoft/Live account not able to access network shares

Sharing a USB drive over wifi network

Ok, I found the answer. Simply by renaming the computer in the living room solved the issue.

Thanks for the answer from another post

Perform the following troubleshooting steps and check if it helps.

    • go to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System"

    • under the "Computer name, domain and workgroup settings" click the shielded "change settings" option (far right)

    • on the "Computer Name" tab, press the "Change" button (bottom right)

    • rename the computer to anything other than what it is now

    • follow the restart prompts

    • using another computer you should now be able to use windows explorer to refresh the computers on the network (under "Network" drop list) and access the newly named computer, it will ask for credentials (username and password) in my case that is the
targets Microsoft id and password, this grants full access to anything shared on that computer

    • repeat these steps on any other computer not allowing access on the network
Keep in mind all of my sharing permissions are open with full control, and remember as an example if A is on A’s computer and he wants to gain network access to computer then he has to enter Microsoft username and password

Also I would suggest you to download and install the latest drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
