Windows Speech Recognition works, but not with Office

How can I get Windows Speech Recognition to work well with Office apps? I have set up Speech Recognition, made sure that the microphone I am using is the only audio input, and completed the accuracy training. When I dictate into Windows Notepad, the dictation works well - conversion to text is fast and accurate, and I can dictate long passages without a problem. So this tells me that the microphone, training, and hardware setup are all good.

However, I am using Office 2019 and whenever I try to dictate in Word or Outlook, Speech Recognition keeps failing to recognize text. After recognizing a few words, Speech Recognition stops transcribing and shows the "What was that?" message. Any further dictation results in the same "What was that?" message. If I turn off dictation and then go back into listening mode, Speech Recognition may recognize a few words before suddenly stopping and showing "What was that?" again, or it may immediately show the "What was that" message without recognizing any dictation. Closing Speech Recognition and re-opening it does not help. Neither does closing Windows and rebooting the system.

I always start Speech Recognition before opening the other apps (Notepad, Word or Outlook).

The system here has more than enough power. The CPU is an Intel Core i7-960 running at @ 3.20GHz. I have 12 Gb of RAM installed. I checked resource use by looking at Windows task manager under the Performance tab. Even with Word, Outlook and Speech Recognition all open, while dictating into Notepad or into Word only 30% of the memory is in use, and CPU utilization is 10%. So processing and memory resources don’t seem to be the problem. The microphone is a Logitech USB headset.

Since dictation works well in Notepad, we can assume that the microphone, speech recognition training, and hardware configuration all are OK. So why does dictation NOT work well in Word and Outlook? Right now I am dictating into Notepad and pasting the resulting text into Word or Outlook, but I would prefer to fix the problem and be able to dictate directly into the Office apps. Any suggestions on how can I fix it?

    Thanks!

    :)

    No speech recognition at all

Hi, this may be of interest:
Installing additional language packs for Windows 10 speech recognition random ranting

This has downloads, + a complete list of languages availablefor Win 10:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=27224
    (but note the date)

fwiw I just tried it- my locale, speech, display language etc are set to UK English. (Which took some doing this time, or something was slightly messed up).

If I type speech in Cortana's search box, say, I get Windows Speech Recognition as top search.

I use Classic Shell, with the Control Panel expanded, so in a second or less I can see 'Speech Recognition' listed there.

Similarly, if I type 'Speech' in Settings I can easily see Speech Recognition.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the speech recognition bar displayed, task manager shows:
    SpeechRuntime.exe in C:\Windows\System32\Speech_OneCore\Common ..........

    sapisvr.exe in C:\Windows\Speech\Common

    running.
