Microsoft starts Windows 10 May 2019 Update rollout

Microsoft revealed yesterday evening that it has started the rollout of the new feature update for its Windows 10 operating system called the May 2019 Update or Windows 10 version 1903.

Microsoft delayed the release of the new feature update for the operating system to take it through another round of testing. The decision to do more tests was made because the previously released feature update, Windows 10 version 1809, had clear quality issues that caused lots of issues for users ranging from data loss to problems with mapped network drives.

Tip: you can defer feature updates for Windows 10 to block their installation.

    Windows 10 May 2019 Update

The feature update is available for users who search for it only at the time of writing, and there not even for all administrators who do so.

Microsoft changed the process significantly. Previously, if you ran a manual check for updates, the update would be download and installed right away. Starting with this feature update, the update is presented to you first so that you get to choose whether to download and install it at that point in time.

In other words: the feature update installation has been unlinked from the regular updating process on Windows 10 devices.

The new option is available on Windows 10 version 1803 or 1809 devices that have the May 21st updates (or later) installed.

    1. Open the Settings application with the Windows-I shortcut.
    2. Go to Update & Security > Windows Update.
    3. Activate the "check for updates" button.
    4. Windows Update queries Microsoft's servers for updates. It may return the feature update and display the option to "download and install now" in the interface.
    5. If you want to install the May 2019 Update, select the option (download and install now) and follow the process.

Note that Microsoft limits availability at this point and that the company is "slowly throttling up" the availability while it is monitoring data and feedback.

Microsoft published a video on YouTube that highlights the new Windows Update functionality.

Some systems are blocked from receiving the new feature update at this point. You can check which update blocks are in place here.

    Closing Words

The last feature update for Windows 10 highlighted the need to test updates more thoroughly before release. It will be interesting to see if the extra two months of testing improved update quality significantly.

I suggest that you wait with the installation of the May 2019 Update for Windows 10 unless you really, really need it. Things should settle down after a month or two, and you don't risk running into another updating issue that you may spend hours or even days fixing.

As always, make sure you create a system backup before you start the upgrade. You may also start the upgrade using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool or the update now option on this Microsoft webpage.

    Office 2019

Only supported on Win10. Sorry, 8.1 users, only 4 years old, gotta go.

Microsoft Office 2019 will only work on Windows 10

    Spoiler Office 2019
Last year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 – the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). Today we’re pleased to share the following updates:

    • Office 2019 will ship in H2 of 2018. Previews of the new apps and servers will start shipping in the second quarter of 2018.
    • Office 2019 apps will be supported on:
      • Any supported Windows 10 SAC release
      • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2018
      • The next LTSC release of Windows Server
    • The Office 2019 client apps will be released with Click-to-Run installation technology only. We will not provide MSI as a deployment methodology for Office 2019 clients. We will continue to provide MSI for Office Server products.

  3. Microsoft Office 2019 Will Run on Windows 10, and Only Windows 10

    Too late, it's already happened.

    Microsoft 365

It makes a lot of sense for businesses, not so much for consumers. If you're deep in the Windows ecosystem, this will soon become the superior option.

Depends on when you started your rollout. You can't start new rollouts from scratch now because Microsoft isn't handing out keys to anyone, although Windows 8.1 is still a viable option.

But to say they're not going to buy it? Eh. Microsoft's interoperability between Office suites isn't that great, particularly between Office 2016 and Office 2007. They both read the same basic formats, and files created on one opens on the other. However, there are significant differences in how the different suites interprets them. Businesses might move to Office 2019 just for compatibility purposes.

Use Google Drive, but just don't open or edit anything on Google Drive. I've had it mess up a few ODF files before, though I think that may have been because the file was generated with a beta version of Libre Office.

Gamers on Windows machines account for over 150 million users on Steam, as one example. Windows 10's shipments to date are around the 660 million licenses sold mark. Gamers are a significant source of revenue for Microsoft, especially when you take Microsoft Store sales into account. Soon, they'll have Windows 10 gamers signing up for Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft Office 2019 Will Run on Windows 10, and Only Windows 10

How is this news or surprising to anyone?
Especially when there are viable and arguably better open-source alternatives out there.. For those of us who don't use Microsoft Office, this isn't a problem.
