  1. Windows 10 1903 update...some strange networking issues when moving files since updating

I recently updated Windows to the 1903 build....doing so, having put things off for a while as the previous build was working fine.

Everything seems to be working well except there is one slight issue I have come accorss when moving/comying files in osme instances...I'll explain in detail below

I store a large amount of media on a Windows based server (WHS2011) which works perfectly for my needs. This server is broken down in to multiple shares, Movies, TV, Music, Software, and so on....

The directory stucture of Movies, for example, is

    \\Servername\Videos\DVD Drips

    \BR Rips

    and so on....

I have created shortcuts to the above directoreis (DVD Rips and BR Rips) on my desktop and I can copy files between my Windows 10 1903 build PC and those shortcuts by dragging the files I want to move over the shortcut icons and they automatically start to transfer as is the way I normally transfer files to save opening up the actual directories.

I also have a share for TV epsiodes that I rip from discs in the following structure

    \\Servername\TV\Showname 1

    \Showname 2

I have a shortcut on my Windows desktop linking directly to the TV level directory....and this is where the problem lies.

If I try to drag files over the shortcut when I have ripped new discs to a directory of a whole season of a tv show, for example, I get a red no entry sign showing that the move/copy command I want to do cannot be completed. I can display the actual directory by double ckicking on the shortut from the same icon and copy/moves those files in by dragging and it works as expected. It just cannot be done via the shortcut icon method.

Has something been changed in 1903 making it impossible to copy/move files via a shortcut icon (to a network share) when that share is the root of the share? I cant see another reason why the TV share...and a few others in a similar setup, have this issue.

If this is a new direction/permissioning structure is there a way I can change permissions to stop this limitation.

I have dug through all of the share shortcuts but cant find anything galingly obvious.

To be clear, I had initially updated once before and this issue put me off enough to roll things back to the previous build, to find that the probelm was no longer present. So this is definitely something that has cropped up in the 1903 build.

It seems a little strange that this limiation be put in place.

I could downgrade again but in truth I want to keep the latest build as the Sandbox feature is very useful to me.

Any pointers would be greatand if you require any other information please let me know

    :)

    Windows Updates failed to instal

I'm not sure how differant XP media center Edition is but you could clear the history \ cache if these folders are there.

    Step 1 Register DLL files.

    =================

By trying this step, we can check if the update engines are working properly.

    1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.

    2. Click Start and Run, type "Regsvr32 atl.dll" (without quotes) in the Open box and click OK.

Note: There is a space between regsvr32 and atl.dll

    3. Similarly, one by one, register the files listed below:

    Regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    Regsvr32 wuapi.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

    Regsvr32 wups2.dll

    Regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    Regsvr32 wups.dll

    Regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgr.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

    Regsvr32 jscript.dll

Note: If you encounter errors while registering any of these files then skip that file and continue with the next one.

If the issue persists, let's move on to the steps below to verify Windows Update services and temporary folders.

Step 2 Verify the relevant Windows Update services.

    =========================================

    1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.

    2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".

    3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

    4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

    5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the button "Stop" under "Service Status" to stop the service.

    6. Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

    7. Please repeat the above steps with the other services:

    Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    Event Log

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Note: Event log service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles; this service does not have an option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.

If it still does not help, let's proceed to step 3.

Step 3 Reload the Update temporary folders.

    ===================================

One possible cause is that the temporary folder for Windows Update is containing corrupted files. Let's erase all the files there to get the system clean.

    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net stop WuAuServ

    2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

    3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

    4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net start WuAuServ

Please test the Windows Update website and let me know the result. If the issue persists, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.

  4. Windows 10 1903 update...some strange networking issues when moving files since updating

    Issue with Windows 7 Gadgets

For some strange reason, my Windows 7 gadgets (Weather, GMail, etc) can no longer connect to the internet and update themselves. I have added both sidebar exe files (C : \Program Files and C : \Program Files x86) to the Windows Firewall Exceptions list. It is the same issue even when UAC is enabled. What could be causing this? Thanks for any help.

I also just realized that my Windows Update is not working as well, so that may be a related issue.
