    1903 May Update Catch 22

    Greetings -

    I'm in a seemingly Catch 22 of updates to Windows 10 - 1903.

The system is an MSI desktop with an I7-9700 processor. I am stuck on Windows Preview Build 18362.30 There is no addon graphic card. My systems relies on the Intel 630 video. I have updated to unofficial versions of Realtek HD Audio Drivers and kept the Nahimic Audio updated as well.

I was out of the Insiders' Preview program for some time. As the release of 1903 was delayed, I decided to rejoin WIP to get started on 1903. That was about a month ago. As 18362.30 didn't seem to want to go any furher, I have been in and out of WIP a couple of times since then.

Somewhere after the initial update, KB4497936 attempted to install and failed. That generated something like KB...666 which I was able to remove from the system. I decided to wait for the general release with hopeful corrections, but since Tuesday's offering I have had the same difficulty. I've been trying to install via "Upgrade this PC now" from the Windows Creation Tool 1903.

In searching, I found something was wrong with ...936. I used the Microsoft "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter to bypass it and went on to attempt 1903 Update with the general release. There alternative KB4505057 was offered, but generated the same type of error. It too was bypassed with the aforementioned troubleshooter. In both cases, the system boots to a Black Screen.

It is very difficult to get my system to boot to Safe Mode (is my machine too fast?), but once I do so I can reboot and get the system to remove the attempeted updates. I can't seem to stop the F8, push, push, push quick enough to catch the 1st Blue Screen repair page, but can catch the 2nd page (sometimes) which allows me to boot to Safe Mode.

Yesterday I went through all the drivers in the Device Manager (not including hidden drivers) to insure all is well there. There was no improvement in attempted Upgrades after that.

While I created a USB Drive to boot from for 1903, it is locked out of practical use by a drive letter assignment difficulty as I have read. I wonder if there is any reason to attempt to create an Update Folder on the desktop and try and install from there.

In any event, I am seeking an appropriate solution to complete the Update to Build Number 18362.116. Attached are images of the Windows Updates and the Windows Quality Updates attempted. This reflects the current status of my Desktop. I'm not interested in rejoing WIP at this time unless there is a likely fix for my current circumstances by doing so.

Life is too short to do frequent clean OS installations!

PS My 8th Gen Laptop updated with no difficulties and seems to be operating comfortably on 18362.116.

  2. Windows 10, version 1903 update failure

Hmm, this is Windows 10 1809 which is the most recent release which is now being succeeded by Windows 10 1903.

I would carry out the steps from my initial reply to reset your Windows Update components.

    Also review the following:

Have you checked the manufacturers website to determine compatibility?

Your configuration might not be listed yet, since it is just rolling out.

Ultimately, I would wait until the ISO file is available then upgrade offline using these steps:

    update to 1903

    No, 1809 is not a pre-requisite for 1903

    1903 May Update Catch 22

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond 1903 May Update Catch 22 :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.
