  1. Windows 10 Home User / Windows Defender Protection - Does it really protect the at home...

Please realize that I would love to use Microsoft Defender as my front line of defense as an anti-everything tool.

I have used Kaspersky and Norton in the past successfully.

I have seen the test results from Av-test, Av Comparatives, Mrg-Effitas and SE Labs

(which shows the product is not 100% effective - there are some wholes, just like there are in other AV suites)

I am not using the PC/Notebook in an enterprise setting or a IT Professional Setting --- Simple home computer

! am seeing in a high volume of posts in this area Use Malwarebytes, Emsoft and so on. The USE list seems to

never end and feels as though it is a generic post that is cut and pasted in many of the situations with minor

    modification.

My usage is purely a home user, I do emails, I use microsoft office, vision, project etc, I may access a corporate site, I

may visit a couple of professional social sites (eg linkedin) don't twitter, Facebook, youtube, torrent, ftp, software dloads

except for microsoft store and microsoft software) Basically I'm a business and home user - user

Edge is browser of choice, Adobe is technically off and Java is technically in a secure as possible setting.

In this form, I am seeing trojans, adware, pup issues, browser issues and ransomware issues (which somewhat frightens me) from using Microsoft Defender as my front line of defense as an anti-everything tool.

Having provided back ground, please tell me in a non-cut and paste cookie cutter document

1: Being the type of user that I am, am I safe in using Microsoft Defender and why

2: Are you using Microsoft Defender in a similar setting and what have you encountered

3: Why are people experiencing all of these issues trojans, adware, pup issues, browser issues and ransomware issues

4: What type of scenario, could I be impacted by

5: What are best practices outside of keeping product up to date with definitions.

6: IF i beta or control test the product and then put down a full complete av suite what may I encounter

best case/worse case: has anyone done that ?

    :)

real time protection in window defender

The behavior you are describing may occur if there are remnants of a third party antivirus program installed.

Go to Security and Maintenance, look in 'Security' and see what program is listed under Virus Protection. Windows Defender will not be enabled if there is a program other than Windows Defender listed.

Have you tried running the software removal tools for any security software (AVG, McAfee, Norton, whatever) that may have previously been on the computer followed by a restart of the computer? List of
    anti-malware product removal tools

For further information see the reply of quietman7 in this thread: Windows Defender

If the issue continues recommend you follow the steps suggested in

Windows defender real time protection cant be turned on.

Go to Security and Maintenance, look in 'Security' and see what program is listed under Virus Protection. Windows Defender will not be enabled and functioning properly if there is a program other than Windows Defender listed.

You tried all suggestions in my previous post and Windows Defender “real time protection”
    still will not turn on?

Did you try everything suggested in Problems
starting Windows Defender in Windows 8/8.1/10
to include (but not limited to) running SFC, scanning for malware and running the software removal tools for any security software (AVG,
McAfee, Norton, whatever) that may have previously been on the computer followed by a reboot? List of
