Windows 10: Old USB hard drive not recognized

Hello,


I have an old USB hard drive that is not recognized after using Windows 10. It says Unknown USB Device (Invalid Configuration Descriptor). I have tried updating the driver automatically but it says that it is already the most updated driver (driver provider Microsoft 10.0.17763.1). When I click driver details it says "no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device".


I have tried using multiple computers (all Windows 10), and still nothing. I have tried uninstalling the device and plugging it in again and still nothing.


The device is an Asion USB Hard Disk box. I think it is so old that the company no longer exists. Please help!

We understand your concern and we will provide the assistance you required to resolve the issue.

Before we proceed, I would like you to provide the information stated below:

1. Is the portable hard drive connected to your PC via USB cable?

2. Did you get any error message that the drive was not recognize by your PC?

For now, I would suggest that you check if the USB cable that connects the hard drive and the PC is not damaged. If not, then I would suggest that you connect your hard drive to another PC and check if the device is recognized in that particular computer.

If the device gets recognized, then I would suggest that you connect the external hard drive, open File Explorer and check if the drive has an assigned letter. If not, open Disk Management while the drive is connected to the system and follow the steps below.

1. Right click on the Start Menu and select Disk Management

2. Right click on the external drive>Select New Simple Volume and
assign letter to the drive.

Outdated External Hard Drive Driver Software, My PC recognizes the hard drive and indicates my USB storage drives are "up to date" but the hard drive will not start

I have an old Smartdisk Crossfire 120GB USB External Hard Drive with the original driver software but it for windows 98. I am currently using windows 10 and I can not locate any compatible drivers that will allow me to access my ext. hard drive.

My PC recognizes the hard drive and indicates my USB storage drives are "up to date" but the hard drive will not start. I have tried to troubleshoot without any luck.

Any suggestions??

To assist you better, I like to know; have you tried formation the USB hard drive by
right clicking on the hard drive and select Format?

If you are unable to format the USB through above mentioned steps, then I suggest you to try formation the hard drive using diskpart command and check if it helps.

Follow the below steps.

1) Press Windows key + r, type cmd and hit
Enter.

2) Type diskpart, hit Enter.

3) Type List volume. (List of available drives will get listed).

4) Select Volume (#), #- number of the volume, which assigned to hard drive.

5) Type Format recommended. (It will start formatting your hard drive)
