Hi, I created a shortcut to a deep path exe on a USB (created in same deep path) and then copied the shortcut to the USB root.

The clever thing is the root shortcut appears to work on any computer, irrespective of USB drive letter!?!?

Is this some relative-shortcut-thingy that's just crept in or has it always worked like this?

    :)

The ".exe" file that the shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to delete the file ?

    Assuming that the program is now installed, do the following;

    • Delete the shortcut
    • Open Windows Explorer and navigate to wherever the program is located (presumably something like C:\Program Files\Gretl\gretl.exe or C:\Program Files (x86)\Gretl\gretl.exe)
    • Right-click on gretl.exe and select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)"

If the new shortcut doesn't work,

    • Right-click on the shortcut you just created and select "Properties"
    • You should be on the "Shortcut" tab; right-click the "Target" box and select "Copy"
    • Paste the contents of the Target box in your next Reply here.
    • Does the Target correctly show the complete path to gretl.exe? If not, was is the complete path to gretl.exe?

I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if that helps.

    • Go to the folder C:\Windows\System32 and sort by file type.
    • Look for the screensaver file type (.scr).
    • Find the file scrnsave.scr(you can choose any of the screensavers).
    • Right click and select send to>desktop (create shortcut). The shortcut on my attachment, but when i click on it my screen goes off and on and nothing else.Works! but how? A shortcut to an exe in a deep path on a USB... :)

    Creating Shortcuts with Batch File

Threw a program together quick for you. It is attached with source in the other. Use it in place of your VBScript.

    It supports:
CreateShortcut [save shortcut] [path to run]
CreateShortcut [save shortcut] [path to run] [icon index]
CreateShortcut [save shortcut] [path to run] [icon file]
CreateShortcut [save shortcut] [path to run] [icon file] [icon index]

If "icon index" is missing, it assumes 0. If "icon file" is missing it assumes "path to run." It doesn't presently support arguments to be added to the shortcut nor modifying the working directory (always assumes same directory as "path to run").

Requires .NET Framework 4.0 to run. Will run natively on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.
