Windows 10: Is this a scam ?

Hi

*** Email address is removed for privacy *** have emailed saying Windows Defender on my Win 10 has been upgraded along with a bill for $899 good for 5years.

I telephoned the number that came with the bill and told them I had not authorised a upgrade, that I did not want it and could not afford it.


They said they would cancel the bill but would need remote access to my PC to delete Win Defender and it would take ten minutes and wanted to do it immediately, I said I would think about it, the reply was that I had 72 hours to do this.


The upgrade was supposedly completed 6/18/19 at which time I was in the Canadian Wilderness with no Internet access and returned late 6/23/19 to my home in Florida. Is this company an accredited Microsoft company ? If it is, is this common practice to bill without any prior warning ? How should I proceed to protect myself and would they leave the original Win Defender on the system.


If it is a scam what action should I take ?
