Windows 10 1903 Corrupts Hard Drive (after reinstallation)

    Hi all,

Recently, I bought a 1TB NVMe SSD to accompany my 240GB SATA SSD and 3TB SATA Hard Drive. I decided to reinstall Windows on the new SSD and the installation went alright except I can no longer access my 3TB Hard Drive properly. It still functions correctly (as I have successfully copied and read data using an Ubuntu live USB) and I can format it in Ubuntu as NTFS but as soon as I load back into Windows, the hard drive is somehow corrupted again and can only occasionally be read (any attempts lead to its utilisation spiking to 100% which makes it hard to do much of anything).

It seems to transfer very little data during these periods of high utilisation (only a few kb per second) and I think it might be the System process that is doing it (perhaps doing a chkdsk in the background?). This makes it very hard to format it under Windows. Disk Management will try to initialise and format the drive but is always met with an I/O error or a timeout. I have left it all day in this state and it was still at 100% when I returned.

I checked the S.M.A.R.T info and it seems to be healthy with about 9000 power on hours and a few bad sectors so I don't really know what is going on here (perhaps Windows thinks there are more bad sectors than there is?). I have tried to do a manual chkdsk /r on the drive (as Disk Management did report that it had a RAW partition) but this barely got anywhere overnight so I ended it.

The 240GB SATA SSD still works perfectly fine so I can't see it as being a problem with the SATA interface and all three drives were accessible on my previous Windows 1803 installation (which was on the SATA SSD)...

    Thanks for your time,

    Josh

    :)

  2. Reinstall Windows 10 to new hard drive

    Hi Rodolpho,

We want to know about the issue you're having with your recovery drive. Please answer the questions below:

    • Are you trying to reinstall Windows 8 or Windows 10?
    • If you already upgraded to Windows 10, were you able to create a new copy of the recovery drive?

We suggest creating a new copy of the recovery drive and then follow the steps provided by Andre Da Costa above this thread.

Update us with the outcome so we can assist you further.

  3. CANNOT DELETE A CORRUPTED FILE ON MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE ON WINDOWS 10

    Hi Leenus,

Hard drive and other external memory storage can be corrupted on account of bad sectors which are no longer accessible or writable due to permanent damage. Your device or hard drive could also be infected by some type of malware. These are some of the possible
causes why you are experiencing the error "ERROR 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable". To address this concern, we suggest performing the following troubleshooting methods:

    Method 1

Check and repair disk errors or corrupted file system. This process can fix "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" error caused by bad sectors, virus infection or file system corruption. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Back up all of the files on the hard drive (except for the corrupted file).
    • Using Search, type CMD.
    • From the search results, right-click on Command Prompt and then choose Run as administrator.
    • On the Command Prompt window, type chkdsk /f h: (h stands for your hard drive) and then hit the Enter key.
    • Delete the corrupted file and check if you'll experience the same error.

    Method 2

Format the hard drive. You can manually format the hard drive to permanently remove "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" error. These are the steps on how to format an external drive:

    • Plug the hard drive into your computer.
    • Back up all of the files on the hard drive (except for the corrupted file).
    • Open File Explorer and then click This PC.
    • Click the external hard drive's name, click on Manage tab and then click on Format.
    • Click Start and then click OK.

Keep us updated with the result.
