Windows 10: Why is the image so distorted when linked to TV via HDMI cable?

Since purchasing both a laptop and TV set (not a smart TV) a couple of years ago a HDMI cable has made it possible to use the laptop on the bigger screen. (Great eg for watching videos)

Suddenly, after another MS update, the image on the TV screen was unwatchable due to distortion.
The image was elongated which meant one could not access the controls at bottom of the player; Play, Pause, Fast Fwd etc)
The video player is VLC.

Can anyone tell me about the nature of the latest update (came yesterday 18/07/2019) and how to regain the ability to watch content from the laptop via the TV screen?

i used to connect my laptop to my TV using HDMI with no problems at all

Now I upgraded to windows 10 and when I connect laptop to TV through HDMI cable the screen is displayed but not properly. It has stripes and the image is distorted.

Is this linked to windows 10?

What can I do?

N8 : HDMI cable is not fit to HDMI port on Sony Bravia TV

I got the HDMI cable with the N8, I tried to connect my N8 to the Sony Bravia TV with this cable. But it is not fit into the HDMI port of the TV.



Is there any other connectivity cable require to connect phone and TV through HDMI cable?



If yes, please suggest me what cable and where to buy that cable.

or

Is there any other way to connect my phone and TV through HDMI.

 

Why exactly is ATi considered be better at HDMI?

I plug my HDMI cable into the card, then into my TV. Those are the steps that I have to do. All the steps you list make absolutely no sense to me.
