Windows 10: How to allow defrag maintenance task to run with no time limit

Windows10. Defrag is configured in TaskScheduler with a time limit of 3 days. However, it seems that it actually runs as part of the Maintenance processing which has a time limit of an hour. Thus, my automatic defrag never runs. I expect it to take longer than an hour based on my particular circumstances. This is not the issue. The issue is how can I tell Windows that I expect this. I have seem mention of marking the task as critical, thus disabling the timeout, but I cannot find how to do this. Can anyone offer some useful advice on this topic?

Method 1:

I would suggest you to Run maintenance task and check if it helps.

The Run maintenance task checks issues that might slow down your computer's performance, such as how many users are currently logged on to the computer and whether multiple programs are running at the same time.

Follow the below steps:

• Press Windows + X on the keyboard.
• Select Control Panel.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Click on Run maintenance task under
  System and Security.

Can not run defrag Error: Storage Optimization cannot start because task scheduler service is not running

Can not run defrag Error: Storage Optimization cannot start because task scheduler service is not running.

Tried running task scheduler that just moans about there being no remote system. Won't let me do anything else.

Defrag still won't run.

Any ideas/suggestions?

 

After KB3163018 & 3149135 Automatic Maintenance Defragments SSD instead of Optimizing

I have both KB3149135 and KB3163018 (both installed on the 15th) , and there is no problem with

Windows defrag tool wanting to defrag, vs running TRIM when clicking on 'Optimise' (which I very rarely use).

- It probably does not make a difference, but I don't use Automatic Maintenance, or defrag.

This was running the Defragment and Optimize Drives tool manually.

(I stopped Auto-Maintenance via Control Panel > Security and Maintenance. I also shut down before the 2:00AM time and shut my modem off as an extra precaution. Don't much like automatic. ).
