Cannot escape reboot and password is not being accepted

I have spent 3 days trying to fix my daughter's brand new HP STREAM laptop. I had entered safe mode and now I cannot get out of it, I cannot pull up a command prompt, I have restarted about 15 times, tried to do a recovery, tried to do a system restore, changed my passwords, even somehow managed to get in the HP diagnostics and ran tests which came out fine. Now....the only thing I have done was push the ESC button repeatedly while restarting and it brought up THIS screen...I have no idea where I'm at or how to repair this...HELPCannot escape reboot and password is not being accepted [IMG]

You can reset your password following the next steps:

    • Reboot your computer / Turn your computer on.
    • Hold down the Shift key at the start of the boot process to enable the GNU GRUB boot menu (if it does not show)
    • Press ESC at the GNU GRUB prompt.
    • Press e for edit.
    • Use the Arrow keys to highlight the line that begins with kernel and press the e key.
    • Go to the very end of the line and add rw init=/bin/bash
    • Press Enter and then press b to boot your system.
    • Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
    • Type in passwd yourusername
    • Set your new password.
    • Restart your system.
