How do I view SMART data in a logical drive?

EDIT: I would have deleted this question if there was a DELETE button. The drive was listed under Physical Drives. I just needed to scroll down.

Yesterday I ran a DLGDIAG (Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows) Extended test on a brand new Western Digital Elements 8TB USB drive. When the test completed at 3am (the result was PASS), I shut down my PC, planning to review the test results (a.k.a. SMART data) later. But this morning, when I restarted the PC and launched DLGDIAG, the drive showed up under "Logical Drives" rather than "Physical Drives," and I don't see any way to view the SMART data. How can I view it?

I admit that I don't understand the distinction between logical and physical drives, and why the drive was originally seen as a physical drive while now it is seen as a logical drive. And why there is no option to view SMART data in a logical drive.

    :)

  2. Not able to view files in Logical Drive

    Dear Binoj,

Can you let me know which is this logical drive that you are accessing.

Is it an external drive or is the drive built in the system.

Also prior to windows 10 which windows did you have?

If you open device manager what all drives do you see?

Also when you open the disk management what all options do you see for the disks as in how many disks are listed over there?

Please attach a screenshot for the device manager and the disk management

  3. Not able to view files in Logical Drive

    Hi Binoj,

The issue you're experiencing with your logical drive might be due to a variety of reasons.

Since you've mentioned that your PC just had an update for Windows 10, are your drivers up-to-date too? If not, you can follow the steps found on this
link on how to update your drivers in Windows 10.

We can run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter which can find and repair problems with your devices and hardware.

    • Right-click the Start icon, then select Control Panel.
    • Choose the Large icons option from the View by
drop down list found on the upper-right part of the Control Panel window.
    • Locate then select Troubleshooting.
    • Click View all from the left pane.
    • Locate and click Hardware and Devices to run the troubleshooter then follow the next steps.

    Let us know the result.

    Regards.

  4. How do I view SMART data in a logical drive?

Lost data from hard drive, what to do now?

Well, I'm sorry to hear that it's a WD My Passport that failed on you, @tomhenry ! *Frown How do I view SMART data in a logical drive? :(
I'd recommend you to try using a different USB cable with it and see if that will help your system to detect it without it disconnecting.
I'd also suggest you to go to Disk Management and see how the drive is listed there. It won't hurt to check up on the health and SMART status of the HDD by running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. Here's a link to the available software: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=11ZOpD

Give these troubleshooting steps a try and keep us posted with the results!
