    WDA is actively functioning

I have recently begun better acquainting myself with Windows Defender Antivirus (WDA), a component that I've generally ignored because I've had Norton Security installed, and it had long been my understanding that any Windows AV component stepped aside when it detected the presence of a third-party AV program. But now, it seems that that is *not* the case.

Specifically, I now L: [email protected] Security>Virus & threat protection---that WDA is not only active but is updating itself, is able to run scans, and has, among other things, a real-time protection function that is turned on by default. Huh?

I gather from some things I've read that Windows Security monitors certain security functions and is designed to take some sort of action (don't remember the details) if installed third-party security apps are not functioning properly or are uninstalled. However, in my case, WDA is actively functioning---don't know what the real-time protection feature is doing, though as I said, it is "on", by default---despite Norton Security being installed and functioning properly.

Would someone please shed some light on this? Thanks you!

    George

    :)

    WDA v. NIS conflict

quietman7, I'm not understanding what you wrote.

You seem to be suggesting submitting a file. Why?

My problem isn't whether a file matches a WDA virus pattern. My problem is that WDA is conflicting with NIS. That's WDA's fault, isn't it?

    WDA v. NIS conflict

My 17677's Windows Defender Antivirus is identifying my Norton Internet Security's archived malware patterns as threats, and quarantining them. I thought WDA was supposed to not turn itself on if it's detected another antivirus. Should I ... disable WDA?
Or just identify to my WDA as an exclusion my NIS folder?

    WDA v. NIS conflict

WDA's detected a dozen of my NIS pattern files.

What I want to do, instead of training WDA to "play nice" with NIS, is have WDA stop competing with NIS. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? If Windows sees "another" antivirus/antimalware, then Windows shouldn't turn on its own competing service.

How do I tell Windows to do what it's always done: don't compete with NIS?
