    Network Discovery Issue - 1903 W10 Pro X64

    Hi all,

I have got a weird intermittent issue with a recently upgraded Windows 10 Pro PC which has been updated from 1803 to 1903. The PC shares a printer and files. Before the upgrade, their hasn't been any issue with the PC until after upgrading to 1903. Ever since upgrading, the computer has intermittent network discovery issues which has meant other PCs have not been able to reliabily connect to the PC and looking in network, it cannot see other PCs. The weird thing is, all required services are running and operating fine.

I have checked all network settings which are all in order and followed many suggestions including turning off IPV6, restarting several network discovery services and turning on SMB file sharing in Control Panel. Unfortuantely, none of these worked at the time so I got my saved copy of 1903 and did an in-place upgrade which reinstalled the OS but kept all user files in tact. For a short period of time, this seemed to solve the issue until the issue cropped back up again. After checking the services and re-enabling SMB file sharing in Control Panel, it has kind of worked but the weird network discovery issues are now intermittent meaning it just comes and goes which isn't ideal.

I am really running out of options on this one! Thinking of downgrading to 1809 maybe for the time being but it won't be long until it has to be upgraded to the latest Windows build. Does anyone have any ideas? It is running off a WiFI dongle which was replaced with another identical one but I can't see that being the issue. Is this more of a Windows issue or is it now more of an internal system issue?

    Kind regards,
    TG02

    :)

  2. Cannot keep Network Discovery Enabled.

    Hi,

    Thank you for the response.

I would suggest that you change the settings in the Firewall to allow Network discovery so that the Firewall stays On while allowing the Network discovery to be enabled.

    Follow the steps.

    a . Open Control panel.

    b. Small icons from the drop down.

    c. Click on Windows Firewall.

    d. Click on Allow programs or feature through Firewall.

    e. Scroll the list and check Network Discovery.

If you need additional assistance then let us know.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

We regret the inconvenience caused to you and We apologies for delay in responding.

This issue might occur due to incorrect settings. I would suggest you to follow the below methods and check if it helps.

For each of the machines experiencing this behavior, will you please perform the following:

Step 1: Ensure Network Discovery is enabled.

    • Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings
    • For each Network Category (Public, Private, Domain) you wish to have the feature enabled, click the arrow to the right of the category to expand it, and select “Turn on network discovery” & check “Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices”
Step 2: Ensure that Network Discovery is allowed inbound in the Windows Firewall (in addition to any other firewall in use).

    • [Windows Key + R] > Firewall.cpl
    • Click “Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall” in the left pane.
    • In the Allowed apps and features scroll box, find “Network Discovery”.
    • Make sure it is checked for all of the Network categories that you have enabled.
Step 3: Ensure the necessary services are started.

    • [Windows Key + R] > Services.msc
    • Base Filtering Engine(BFE)
    • Computer Browser(Browser)
    • DHCP Client(DHCP)
    • DNS Client(DNSCache)
    • Network Connection (NetMan)
    • Network Location Awareness(NLASvc)
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)(RPCSS)
    • Server(LANManServer)
    • SSDP Discovery (SSDPSrv)
    • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper (LMHosts)
    • Workstation(LANManWorkstation)

Step 4: I would suggest you to run Home Group troubleshooter and see if that helps.
    • Click Start and type troubleshooting in the search box.
    • Select Troubleshooting.
    • Select View all on the top left corner.
    • Run HomeGroup troubleshooter.
Let us know the update after you try the above steps.

  4. Network Discovery Issue - 1903 W10 Pro X64

    WSD vs Netbios Network Discovery

I have to say this must be a question no one can answer in a straight forward way. Let's start with saying that Microsoft has introduced an undated (or a new version of) network discovery topology in Windows 10 that is not compatible with older Windows OS's. I never had issues with Windows 7 and Windows XP home networking. I don't remember having to deal with services called "Function Discovery...". Never had issues with my computers "not" being listed in Network Places either. Of course the so-called discovery method between W7 and XP was NetBIOS.

In my mixed W10 (Home and Pro) and W7 network, WSD has problems maintaining the list of computer names in Network Places. Specifically, the computer name associated with the computer running W10 Home keeps disappearing after 30 minutes or so. The only way to make it reappear is to restart the "Function Discovery Resource Publication" service on the computer. This is a major pain. So I assume this is an undocumented bug. I don't know if Microsoft is aware or has addressed it.

My solution was to disable the service and let NetBIOS take over as the discovery method for the computers on my LAN. Here's what I did: https://social.technet.microsoft.com...tpronetworking

I would like to use WSD, but until MS fixes the service on W10 Home, I'll stay with NetBIOS. Is it true that MS is dumping Network Places in Windows 10? If so, what will replace it?
