Remove disk or other media - select proper boot device or insert boot media

    Hi,

I have been running a stationary computer (windows 10 pro) for about one year now. never failed before.

Last night I upgraded, a rather large upgrade, duration 1 hour or more.

After the upgrade the message on the screen is:

    - "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart" after pressing key is says:

    - "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected Boot device and press a key".

This goes on indefinitely. Which means, I guess, that it never leaves the BIOS.

This is what I did to fix the problem, all with the same negative outcome and same text message:

    • I removed all peripherals and attempted to reboot
    • attempted to boot from original Windows DVD media
    • attempted to boot from Paragon recovery USB key
    • I removed all extra PCI cards (except graphics card)
    • i installed an old system-drive

Clearly this was caused by the update, but I do not understand what can cause this. And I have no chance of rolling back.

I understand that a harddrive could be corrupted, but the boot attempts from other devices or even another drive tells another story, I believe.

The PC is a self built, and has not failed before.

    Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170

    Any ideas, please?

    Thanks

    :)

Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device

    Hi Ryan,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

Have you installed the OS after changing the hard drive?

If you have and if you are still getting this error message, I would suggest you to go to BIOS and set the right boot order.

I suggest you to download the Windows 10 ISO and create a Media Creation tool from different computer and then perform Automatic Repair.

    Refer to the following link:

    Download Windows 10

(Refer to the section "Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool " in the above article
    for creating the tool).

Once you have the installation media, follow the steps:

    • Start your computer from the installation media. Insert the disk or USB stick and restart your computer. If you see a message asking you to “Press any key to boot from DVD,” do so. If you don’t see the message, you might need to
change the boot order in your computer's BIOS settings so that it first starts from the disk or USB. When you see the 'Install Windows' page, tap or click 'Repair your computer' link to start the Windows Recovery Environment.
    • In the Windows Recovery Environment, on the Choose an option screen, click 'Troubleshoot'.
    • Click, Advanced Options and then click on 'Automatic Repair'.
    • After this complete the repair and see if you are able to boot in to your computer.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you to try boot rec commands from winRE

To run Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), follow these steps:

    1. Insert the Windows installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.

    2. Press a key when the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD appears.

If your PC does not detect the media automatically

    • During the restart process, read the screen for any instructions that explain how to interrupt normal startup and enter the basic input/output system (BIOS) setup utility. Most PCs use the F2, F10, ESC, or DEL key to begin the
      BIOS Setup.
    • Look for a tab in the BIOS Setup Utility that is labeled
      Boot Order, Boot Options, or
Boot. Following the directions on the screen, use the arrow keys to go to the
      Boot Order, then press Enter.
    • Locate the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive (this might be called Removable Device) in the Boot list. Following the directions on the screen, use the arrow keys to move the drive up so that it appears first in the Boot list. Press Enter.
The boot order sequence is now changed to boot from the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive.
    • Press F10 to save your changes and to exit the BIOS Setup Utility. Select
Yes in the confirmation window. The PC will restart.
    3. Select a language, a time and a currency, a keyboard or input method, and then click
    Next.

    4. Click Repair your computer.

    5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, select the drive of your Windows installation, and then click
    Next.

    6. At the System Recovery Options dialog box, click
    Repair your computer.

    7. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click
    Next.

    8. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click
    Startup Repair.

Hope this information was helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.
