  1. How a harddisk performs with reallocated sectors

I want to ask how a hard disk will perform with reallocated sectors compared with 0 reallocated sectors if anyone knows, my hard disk has 1200 reallocated sectors and they have not been growing so my question in general is if the reallocated sectors may impact the read and write speed I'm curious because theoretically I understand that the reallocated sectors are no longer used by the hard disk so the harddisk should write data on a new surface so I don't understand why performance should reduce unless the reallocated sectors increase daily of which my hard disc i used formatting tool to write Zeros and ones to permanently erase everything beyond recovery so I'm certain start my hard disk is written data completely on a new surface or new sectors. Does anyone have another opinion about a hard disk reallocated sectors and performance-related issues

    :)

  2. What do reallocated sectors mean?

S.M.A.R.T. indepth online analysis of my old maxtor 40 gb (on the P4) says:

    18% fitness
    99% performance

    and.......

NOTE : your hard disk has 399 reallocated sectors (this value is very large and your hard disk should be replaced). Hard disks do have spare sectors (usually from 256 up to 1024) used to replace bad ones. This remapping operation is transparent to the end user. Anyway, this can lead to degradated performances (because remapped sectors are in different places of the disk than the original ones and the head needs additional moving). If reallocated sectors grow over time, you might encounter some serious troubles. A backup of the most important data is suggested anyway.

  3. Reallocated Sectors Count: Should I be worried?

Every drive has the occasional defects in manufacturing. These defects prevent reading/writing to a sector. As a way to combat this, the sectors that are flagged as damaged are moved, or reallocated.

As every drive series is different, sector reallocation is a poor indicator of drive health. Some large drives don't have enough data (user submitted records of "good" drive information), so they default to the danger readings of much smaller drives.

In short, you should worry if reallocated sectors is increasing consistently. If the number is constant after several boots, then it isn't a problem. If it increases consistently then you should be worried.

    Reallocated Sector Count 05

    This. Replace ASAP.

Reallocated sectors are only "fine" (if the drive is backed up very regurarly - which every drive should be anyway - and if it's not very essential) if there are very few of them and they do not increase in numbers no matter what you do, but this is not the case here.
