Disconnect or Unmap External Hard Drive

I have an external hard drive to which I do routine manual backups. I would like to be able to disconnect this drive without having to "pull the plug."

The reason for this is that Ransomware will infect ALL connected drives. So I would like to disconnect it when not in use, connect it long enough to do my backups and then disconnect it again without plugging and unplugging the USB cable.

I found a ton of articles on how to disconnect a flash drive and one article that says to use diskpart which is a command unknown to Windows 10.

    Can this be done?

    :)

    External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
