    Access Denied: cut off from my USB drives

    My PC was fine until Friday. It's an HP Laptop, running Windows 10, 64 Bit.

    I generally have two external hard drives mounted, and I occasionally also connect a CD/DVD drive. This past Friday I connected the CD/DVD drive and Windows didn't pick it up. So I rebooted. After this reboot, all three USB drives were missing. I opened Device Manager and noticed that the USB Controllers had those little warning signs on them. I uninstalled the drivers and rebooted again. So now Windows sees the drives, but it won't give me access to any of them. I get "[letter]:\ is not accessible. Access is denied."

    The devices appear in Device manager, and they are reported to be in good health. In Disk Manager, they are present with status "Healthy", and it shows their total capacities and free capacities.

    Going into the Security portion of the Properties tab for these Drives, it tells me that I need to have Read permissions and to click Advanced, on the Advanced dialog it shows me a Continue button to go on with Admin privileges (my account is in the Administrators group). Using that dialog I can change the Owner, and Add permissions. It gives me error messages - "Failed to enumerate objects in the container" - but when I re-open the dialog, any changes that I made the previous time are reflected. So I seemingly can add and change permissions. But I'm still blocked.

    The Tools tab in the Properties dialog has an Error Checking option. I believe this is like running chkdsk. That doesn't work; I get a message "The disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk." Likewise running chckdsk manually from an Administrator command line dialog doesn't work ("Access denied"). The takeown command doesn't work either ("Access denied").

    Based on some things I saw on-line I got suspicious of the HP Device Manager and HP Client Security components. I uninstalled them. That didn't help

    Using gpedit, I made sure the Deny Access settings for Removable Disks in the Administrative Templates section were all set to Disabled.

    Using the Disk Manager, I changed the letters assigned to the drives, in hopes that this would goose Windows into freeing them. No dice.

    I seem to have permission to Access the drives, but something is blocking them. How can I find and kill whatever is blocking them? This seems to be global to all the USB drives. I've been working with the two that are my main backups, but if I plug in the CD/DVD drive, or my phone, or a stick-drive, they're all in the same condition, and it doesn't matter which USB port I use.

    :)

    Access is denied when connecting USB drive

    I am running WIn 10 Pro on an HP ProDesk 400 G4.
    When I attach a thumb drive or Western Digital Passport hard drive to the USB port, the drive is assigned a letter, but if I try to access it, I get the message “You don’t currently have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently get access
    to this folder.” When I click the Continue button, the next message that appears says “You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access to this folder, you will need to use the
    security tab.” When I click on the security tab link, the Properties of the drive are displayed, but there is no Security Tab displayed, only General, Tools, Hardware, Sharing and Customize tabs. I am logged in
    as an administrator, so I am not sure why I am being denied access. I have plugged the drives into other systems (including Win 10 machines) and have had no problem accessing the drives and data. Only on this desktop system, which because my old desktop system
    crashed, had become my primary machine. I also found that if I boot into Safe Mode (via MSCONFIG), I can access the drive and data fine. So how can I fix this so I can access my USB drives in normal mode? I appreciate all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

    access denied for a usb flash drive.

    Hi. BryanHenson1

    My name is Douglas and I am an Independent Advisor.

    I would like to help you.

    To help you a little more with this bug, what kind of error it shows as information since what you indicate may be that a corrupted or malicious file damages your USB flash drive.

    In the same way, you can use the error checking tool, this tool integrated in the Windows system to check and correct errors of the device.

    If you have access problems on your hard drive, USB, SD card or file folders, you can follow the steps below to correct the "Access Denied" error on your device now:

    1. Connect an inaccessible device, such as a hard drive, an external hard drive, an SD card or USB with a PC;

    2. Open this computer> Right-click on the file folder or your inaccessible device and select Properties;

    3. Select Tools> Click Check> Browse drive.

    If your problem is already resolved, you can access your device and directly open the unit.

    Another option is to obtain permissions to Hard Disk, USB, SD Card or Inaccessible File Folders:

    1. Right click on the hard drive, USB, Micro sd or file folder and select Properties;

    2. Go to Security> Edit;

    3. When opening a new window, click on your user name in Group or user names;

    4. Check all the boxes in the Allow column and click OK, and then click Apply to obtain permissions and access your inaccessible device.

    If these two quick repairs still do not help you, relax!

    We offer you 2 options and you can choose one according to your own case.

    1. If you have important data on this device, you can try Method 1 below to solve this problem without losing any of your data;

    2. If the data is useless, try Method 2 to fix 'Access Denied' error of your storage device (such as USB, sd card, internal or external hard disk) or file folders through formatting.
