  1. Backup and restore, along with file history cannot restore certain files

So recently, I wanted to do a reset of my laptop. This involved backing up my data, which included my notes. I proceeded to find out how to back my notes up (I had already allowed for online backing up of the notes and was searching for a way to back it to an external drive) and found that you could go to

    C:\Users\jonat\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState

where you would find a plum.sqlite file that supposedly contained your sticky notes. I cut that specific file out and pasted it into an external drive and then I opened up my notes app. As expected since I had removed that file my notes were empty. I then proceeded to paste the file back from the external drive into its original folder as a test but when I opened sticky notes again, none of my files were there.

I then tried multiple things. I used file history, targeting the whole folder (I had just run file history a few hours before I had even touched the sticky notes file) to attempt to restore that specific folder back to its previous state. Each time, the file history would state that some files were not restored. my sticky notes were not restored as well. I then tried to use backup and restore to target those specific files. Each time, I would get an error saying that a required privilege is not held by the client, and hence my files were not restored as well.

Backup and restore has a feature where you can restore the files to a different location compared to the original one and I attempted this as well, but the same issue came up.

Eventually I was able to fix the issue by creating new folder in the

    the C:\Users\jonat\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe

section. I figured that if perhaps backup could not restore the files to the original itself, it might be able to restore it to a different folder with the same permissions, which is why I created a file in the general area. I then directed backup to restore the files to the new test folder instead. This worked and I was able to retrieve my previous plum.sqlite files, which I then placed in actual folder where I was trying to back them up too originally. This worked and I was able to get my old sticky notes back.

What I want to ask is why backup and restore, along with file history could not backup this file directly? It seems like an issue if someone who randomly touch the files in the AppData section (I know its hidden, but still) and then, when he tries to restore from a backup upon finding an issue with his apps, realises that neither of these functions work like they are supposed to.

I am sorry if I did not use the correct terminology, most of what I know about the windows operating system is through observation. I just found this a huge issue and would like to know if I was doing something wrong as I was backing up my files in case a situation like this happens in the future.

    :)

Shute I never thought about system restore. But its been more than a week now, don't know if I can go back that far. But even then will it put back user files?

  3. File History Restore Not Working

My apologies for my not explaining my problem clearly.

File History would always list my external drive. It would not list the File History backup subfolder, "Computer Name", which contained my backup.

I completed the 5 steps you recommended, and in step (4), using Windows Explorer, I opted to change the name to "File History.old" instead of deleting it. Had I deleted it, all my backup files that I want to reload onto drive C would have been gone.

When I look at the external backup drive in Windows Explorer it now shows 4 folders, $RECYCLE.BIN, FileHistory, FileHistory.old and System Volume Information. Bottom line, FileHistory contains only the backed up data currently on Drive C as a result of step
5, while FileHistory.old contains the data I wish to reload.

Now when I go to Control Panel/File History/Select drive, and select the external backup drive, only the subfolder contained in FileHistory shows up. The subfolder contained in FileHistory.old, which contains the data I wish to restore, is still not listed.
When I select "Restore personal files" it only shows folders associated with FileHistory.

Thanks for your attention and help, but I am now resigned to copying and pasting the files that I need to restore. I totally yield to the higher power that is Microsoft.

    Again thanks,

    RP
