  1. Files from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup

    hello community,

ive been trying to resolve this issue for days now, without any luck.

I am setting up a new external HDD for file history backup on windows 10.

Everything seemed to work fine at the beginning. The backup started and ran over night. The next day i checked and was surprised to see just 108gb backup size.

The backup was supposed to be the whole User folder on C drive (108gb) and all of the internal D drive (~600gb).

As it seems, the backup didnt back up data of the D drive. Thats were my investigations began. I tried to choose different folders on the D drive. Tried resetting the backup. Tried formating the backup hdd, tried changing all kinds of permissions. Tried a different external HDD. But nothing is working. Every time, just the C drive is backing up, but never the D drive.

i did extensive google searches on that topic but always just come across people who try to backup to an internal drive. This is not the case here. My backup is to an external drive. I have two recognized internal drives that need backup to an external drive. The internal drive D can be used just normaly and i can choose folders to backup. It jsut doesnt work. The backup will tell me that it is successfuly done, but when i check, i see all the C drive data and none of the D drive data.

Can anyone help me with this problem.

    Thank you,

    Paul

    :)

Windows 10 File History backup not working

I want to back up my Windows 10 laptop using the built-in Windows back up facility. All of the advice I have read on the internet suggest the use of File History.

I have a Western Digital 500GB USB hard drive which I attached to the laptop and followed the advice on the Windows 10 web site: Settings/Update and Security/Backup/Backup using File History/Automatically back up my files set to 'on'. Then in More options I clicked 'Back up now'.

I could feel the external HDD spinning for a couple of minutes and it then stopped. I left it for another hour to see if anything else happened, but nothing. I looked under 'This PC' for the external HDD, which was listed but remains empty, although it shows a folder 'File History' which is empty. That suggested that something was started but not completed.

I found this thread elsewhere on this forum:

file history - Windows 10 Forums

which discusses the possibility of the USB port (and HDD) being automatically turned off to save energy, and wondered whether that might be happening in my case.

I have now followed the procedure recommended and found that the external HHD now spins for a longer time. However, it stopped again after about 30 minutes, so I had a look in More options/Restore files from a current backup. This somehow caused the HDD to spin up again, but the message on that page states that the backup procedure is still working. Also, in 'This PC' the HDD icon still shows empty. After a further 20 minutes, it stopped spinning again, yet still no sign of any backup files on the external HDD.

Unless there is something obvious that I am doing wrong, I can only assume there is a problem with File History.
I notice that there is still the option to use the old Windows 7 backup facility, which I have found to work well on my old W7 computer. I suppose there is also the option of using some third-party backup software.

    Three questions, please:

    1. Should I persist with File History and, if so, is there an easy fix?

    2. Should I use the Windows 7 backup option or another recommended software?

    3. I am also not sure about leaving my (internal) HDD being left turned on, as explained in the thread I link to above. Is it advisable to leave it set to 'never turn off'?

Apologies for being so verbose, but I felt it necessary to include as much information as possible!

  3. File History does not backup automatically

    Hi,

Thank you for writing us back.

I would suggest you to go through the below steps:

    • Press Windows key+I.

    • Click on Update and security.

    • On the left pane, click on backup and select on under automatically back up my files.

    • Click on more option under on button.

    • Select every hour (default) under back up my files.

    • Select forever (default) under keep my files.

Also refer the link below link and check if it helps:

    Also work in Windows 10

I hope this helps. Please post back with the status of the issue and we will be glad to assist you further.

  4. Files from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup

    File History

I have upgraded from Win7 Pro. Previously used Backup and Restore, saving the backups to my Secondary Drive (DFiles from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup :) which is an internal drive. OS is on Primary Drive (CFiles from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup :)

When I try to setup File History on Win 10, it cannot locate the secondary drive. No libraries are on (DFiles from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup :). I do have the OneDrive Folder placed in (DFiles from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup :).

I can setup File History using an External Flash Stick or HDD.

I prefer to use (DFiles from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup :) for file History.

Can the Secondary Internal Drive (DFiles from secondary HDD not backed up with Windows 10 file history backup :) be used for File History?

    Thanks

    Jim T.
