Windows 10: PC fails to wake from sleep mode

Immediately following the September Windows update my computer would not wake from sleep mode. The screensaver kicks in correctly and the PC reactivates from that, using either the keyboard or mouse. When the PC actually goes into sleep mode the display goes black but when I use the mouse or keyboard to try to wake the computer I see disk drive activity as if the PC is trying to wake up, but the screen remains black. After a few seconds the disk drive activity ceases and the computer will not respond until I force power off with the power button.


Computer - self built desktop with a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB motherboard

Processor - AMD FX4130

RAM - 16GB

OS - Windows 10 Home version 1903 (64 bit).

Installed - 11/09/2019 (presumably from the update as Win 10 was a free upgrade from Win 7)

OS Build - 18362.418

Graphics card - EVGA GeForce GT730 1GB

Driver - 436.48 - latest driver updated yesterday from 436.30 which was in place at the time of the September Windows update.


Windows power plan is balanced and I have tried setting all defalt values but fault persists.

Screen is currently set to turn off NEVER. It was previously set for 10 minutes.

PC is currently set to go to sleep after 30 minutes. I have tried it at 2hours. Fault is the same.

Screen saver is currently set for 2 minutes and functions correctly.


I have run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and that completed successfully.

I have run sfc /scannow and got Verification 100% complete and Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

It seems the only way round this problem is to set the PC to turn off NEVER, but that defeats the object of the sleep function.

Given that everything was working fine before the September update and the fault started immediately after the update can anyone give me a clue as to what the problem is?

• Aside from Windows Update. were there any changes made on your computer prior to the issue?
• Is this the first time you experienced the issue?
• To make sure that we have not missed on anything, what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
• Send us a screenshot of your screen when you wake up your computer from sleep mode.

PC waking up automatically from sleep mode

I understand that the PC is waking from sleep mode as soon as you set it for sleep mode.



I appreciate your efforts in trying to find out that the issue is due to the wireless mouse and keyboard you are using.

1. Are you aware of any changes made to the PC prior to which you weren’t facing this issue?
2. Which build version of Windows 10 are you using currently?

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to check the power management tab for the driver and see if that helps.

1. Press Windows key + R. This will open Run. Alternatively, you can go to Start and search for ‘Run’.
2. In Run dialog box, type ‘devmgmt.msc’ and hit enter.
3. Expand the Keyboard and Mouse drivers.
4. Double-click on the drivers and click on Power Management tab.
5. Un-check the box next to Allow this device to wake the computer.
6. Click on OK and close the device manager.

Try putting the PC to sleep mode and then check if the PC is waking up automatically.

• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

If you are having issues waking your PC from sleep, we suggest running the
Power troubleshooter as an initial troubleshooting. Kindly follow these steps:

• Click on Start.
• Type Troubleshoot, and then press Enter.
• Under Find and fix other problems, click on Power.
• Click on Run the troubleshooter button.
• Follow the onscreen guide.
