    Hello:

I have 25+ years of computer system design & repair experience, but certain issues with Win10 from Win7 upgrades continue to baffle me!

This issue: Windows 10 Install media (latest version) or win 10 64 .iso file (latest 1903) setup file will not run an upgrade from Win7.1 Pro -- aborts after splash screen. Consider these points:

    1. This is a multiboot system that by default will boot to Win 7.1 64 Pro -- also will boot to XP Pro 64 and XP Pro but are no longer used for obvious reasons -- these other two operating systems do not seem to be the issue at hand.
    2. For Win 7.1 64 Pro Have uninstalled Bitdefender Total Security 2020 (to prevent upgrade interference) and both Acronis True Image & Acronis Disk Director as these two versions installed on Win 7 are not compatible with Win 10 and also had an Acronis bootloader
    3. Have run Microsoft Windows upgrade problem solver and any issues there have been reported repaired.
    4. All Win7.1 Pro updates are installed successfully and up to date as of this posting.
    5. Win7 Pro 64 runs like a champ and has no known issues otherwise.
    6. No other peripherals are attached other than a keyboard/mouse and a USB wireless dongle.
    7. The mobo is an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe with 8gb memory and pretty much the fastest processor that mobo can handle
    8. Hard drive space is not an issue as there is plenty to work with on the C: Win7 64 Pro drive.

Having burned the Win 10 64 .iso file to a bootable DVD (this DVD was also used for a clean install of Win 10 to another laptop and worked perfectly), when I run the setup file from within Windows, I get a momentary small Windows 10 of and then nothing else. Using task manager, I can see that no application is running. The results are the same whether I run as admin or just double-click setup. I also have full admin rights on this desktop computer.

If I boot with the DVD, it does so successfully and eventually prompts me for a Win 10 code, then proceeds to install choices of leaving programs and files intact or clean install (advanced). Choosing "leaving files & programs intact" it then informs me that I cannot upgrade this way and that I must run the setup from within Windows 7 to upgrade, which leads to the results previously mentioned where setup aborts with the 2-second splash screen.

In my experience, if there are any incompatible Win 7 programs, setup will tell you to uninstall them prior to the Win10 upgrade, then start the upgrade over again without these programs. I do not believe I have any current incompatible startup programs that would prevent the upgrade at least (though certainly some may not be compatible with Win 10 once installed).

Let's start with this. Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated as I've really found nothing else online that resembles this issue. I really want to avoid a clean Install of Windows 10 on this machine.

    Best regards....Jeff E.

    :)

New install Windows 10 (issue solved)

If downloading a 3,5 GB file isn’t a problem then try Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, it’ll download Windows 10 image and setup installation files on USB stick.

  3. Windows 10 USB boot

Hi there, am not a windows 10 expert. I have a pc in the bedroom on windows 10, I messed up the bootloader trying to fix the xp on that system.

System wont boot, trying to repair via win 10 usb installer.

Downloaded the media creation tool to install windows 10 installer on usb stick. Not compatible with a host of usb sticks I have. Tried the usb sticks that others use, but I think they use rufus; as the media creation tool by win 10 does not detect the usb stick.

So quick question, the win10 machine i am trying to repair the bootloader is a win7 upgraded to win10.
If i were to use the usb win10 installer to "repair installation" does the version of the iso downloaded via the media creation tool matter?

    There is three options:
    Windows 10
    Windows 10 Home
    Windows 10 N

Also is there a step by step instead of using rufus as I want to try an alternative method of creating a usb win 10 installer. Preferably with more compatibility.

    System is a asus sabertooth 990 (r2?) with AMD phenom X 6.

Also is there any other software I can load onto the usb that can repair the bootloader easily?
That would be the ideal alternative. Thanks

Where to Buy Latest Windows 10 Home

The retail physical copies don't include the latest version. If you want the latest copy of Windows 10 Home, you will have to purchase a digital license then download and create a bootable copy using the Media Creation Tool

The Media Creation Tool, will download the latest version Windows 10 version 1703, build 15063.0. You can download additional cumulative updates after setup through Windows Update.

Next month (October 17th), the Media Creation Tool will be updated again to include the latest version, Windows 10, 1709. So, if you want, you wait and get the latest version.
