    Hi all,

today after I have started up my computer, my OneDrive starts to back up my files automatically. I have remembered VERY CLEARLY that I have disabled OneDrive syncing, and there is nothing in my OneDrive space, but somehow it started again without manually setting anything.

I tried to set the backup option on "Manage Backup". After I clicked "stop syncing" on Desktop, nearly all my icons on my desktop have disappeared. They show up again when I started syncing again.

I'd like to ask how to disable syncing without losing any of my data.

Thank you in advance for the help.

    Steven

PS to dear Windows OneDrive Team: I don't know if this is a feature or a new update something I didn't understand. But this feature is REALLY INCONSIDERATE. In my understanding, "syncing" means to make the status the same at two different points, not to upload my files to one place and delete the original ones. I should choose to use it whenever I want and when I don't want it I can disable it as I want, WITHOUT CONCERN OF LOSING ANY OF MY DATA. So must the new users think if they are really gonna use this application? Are they risking losing all their data once they decide to stop syncing the files?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 - OneDrive

Right click on the app and one of the properties has an option to not automatically start it. Uncheck, restart the computer, and it should stop. If you want to go another step further, find the OneDrive app in the start menu, right click on it and uninstall.

If that is still insufficient, there is a batch uninstaller for OneDrive available online. I can copy the code here if you need it.

OneDrive Placeholders are coming back, now called On-Demand Sync

OneDrive starts backing-up my files automatically. After stopped syncing, the icons on my... [IMG]

"At Ignite 2016, Microsoft has just announced that it is bringing Placeholders back to OneDrive on Windows 10. Now, they are not called Placeholders anymore — Microsoft is renaming the feature to “On-Demand Sync” which makes a lot more sense than “Placeholders”.

The company demoed this feature at Microsoft Ignite today, and it works just like it used to previously. As you can see in the screenshot above, the files stored in OneDrive weighed in around 9GB, but the actual size on disk was only around 3MB which is really neat. Of course, this feature isn’t anything new as it was available back in the Windows 8 days. However, Microsoft removed the feature with Windows 10, and after lots of waiting, they are finally coming back.

In case you are not familiar with OneDrive Placeholders, it’s a pretty neat feature which lets you see all of your OneDrive files on your computer — but they are not actually downloaded on your PC. When you open them, OneDrive will download the files on-demand, saving your local space which is really useful, especially if you have a PC that doesn’t have a lot of storage.

While Microsoft didn’t announce when exactly On-Demand Sync will be available to OneDrive users, we suspect it will be available with Windows 10 Redstone 2 — which is expected to arrive early next year.

How to Stop and Start OneDrive Syncing - my simple method

I have created a simple solution for me to stop and start OneDrive Syncing by using the Windows Task Scheduler.

I have created a basic task to start OneDrive with the following:

    • Task Name: Start OneDrive
    • Trigger: Daily
    • Scheduling: Your prefered start time (enter the date when you want the syncing to commence)
    • Action: Start a program
    • Script: Where the OneDrive image resides, normally in C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe

When OneDrive starts it will open the OneDrive window and if set the OneDrive taskbar icon will appear.
I work from home, so I do not have to log off – you have to try that one by yourself.
DO NOT USE THE ADMINISTRATIVE OPTION.

The second basic task is to stop OneDrive:

    • Task Name: Stop OneDrive
    • Trigger: Daily
    • Scheduling: Your prefer stop time (enter the date when you want the syncing to commence)
    • Action: Start a program
    • Script: Taskkill.exe with the arguments /im OneDrive.exe /F
Once OneDrive is stopped, when set, the OneDrive icon may still be shown as a toolbar icon, but as soon as you move the mouse over the icon it will disappear.

Save and test check with a start and stop time close to each other – make it 10 minutes between start and stop and verify - then setup the real times.

If anyone has a better idea it would be great to hear from you.

Hope this will help you all.
