Windows unexpectedly shut down during update

    Hi,

Back in June this year, I got a notification telling me to update my laptop to Windows 10 1903. After downloading the update, the computer, as usual restarts to update, and I let it do its own business while checking in once in a while. I remember last seeing it at about 45%, before heading out of my room, and then later when I checked again the computer has turned off (this was approximately 1.5 hours after it began updating). I thought that it is done with the update, so I turned it back on, but then after the Windows logo showed up it said something along the lines of "Undoing changes made to your computer" as the loading icon was spinning beneath it. After about half an hour, it finished doing whatever it was doing, restarted the computer and ran like normal. But then upon logging in, I noticed that the 1903 features weren't there. So I checked the OS info and it said that it is still in 1809, which makes sense as it was undoing what it did.

So I thought it just happened to bug out during the update process, so I decided to try again although I was rather busy at that time. Somewhere in August I finally remembered to do it again, but then when I checked for updates it said that Windows is up to date. So I waited for some time until in September it still didn't come out. So I checked a few instructions on the internet on how to fix that problem. I tried troubleshooting, deleting the update folder, and a lot of other things that were on several sources but none of them worked. Lastly, I tried downloading the Windows Update Assistant, which worked, and it downloaded the update as usual and then shut down for a restart. So I once again let it update on its own, but later when I got back it has turned off once more, and then the same thing happened with undoing the changes and whatnot.

Yesterday, I finally got the time to try and update it again, and last I saw was it was at about 48%, when after I just went to the bathroom for a short while, it has been turned off. Finally getting the pattern, just now I tried again and I decided to stay there, but after about 48%, someone called me and then after returning it has turned off once more.

I can't identify the cause of the computer shutting down, and I am planning to try again tomorrow and try to not leave it unattended at all so I can see when it shuts down, in case I can get a clue on what caused it.

Does anyone know what is the problem and if there is a way to solve it?

    Below is my device specifications:

In case it helps, I am using a 2013 Dell XPS 15 9530, originally running Windows 8.1, updated to Windows 10 somewhere in late 2015 (November if I remember correctly). Since late last year, the computer has faced several minor problems like acting slower despite the disk space being rather empty and not much processes are running. Earlier this year, the computer battery experienced permanent failure, however, Dell has ended support for the computer just over a few months before that so I wasn't able to get a replacement, meaning that the computer has to run under power at all times.

I think the battery problem might be the cause of it, but I am not sure for sure.

Hope someone could find a solution for this or at least determine the cause of it.

    :)

OK, first complete your system specs, as it will help us diagnose your problem. Second, can you be a bit more descriptive about the "shut off"? Does it go through the windows shut down procedure, or does the power just shut off completely?

windows explorer closes unexpectedly after windows 10 update

    Hi Sanjay,

There are several reasons why the Windows Explorer is closing unexpectedly. This may include an outdated video driver or the system files on your PC may be corrupted or mismatched with other files. Answering the following questions may help us in resolving
    the issue:

    • Aside from the Windows 10 Update, were there any other changes made on your computer prior to the issue?
    • What is the exact error message or code are you getting when the Windows Explorer closes unexpectedly?
    • Were you able to install all pending updates on your computer?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you already performed?

    Regards.
