Quick access folder opens very slowly if I have mapped a network drive in X network and try...

    Hello,

After I have connected folder from network location or mapped a network drive and then I leave that network and try to open Quick Access, the Quick Access folder opens painfully slow. It takes about 1+ minutes to open. Then I switch File Explorer to open "This PC" instead of "Quick Access", everything works fast as it should be. If I clear Quick Access, it starts to open fast again. But is there a workaround that I should not have to clear Quick Access every time I want to use PC after switching networks?

Using Windows 10 1903 OS build 18362.418, but the same problem was also with earlier versions. As I unmap a network drive, Quick Access starts working fast again.

    :)

  2. Pin to Quick Access on a Mapped Network Drive

If you use the Network Locations wizard to add a network location / subfolder as above, then you can right click it and pin it to your quick access list. This then works.

Microsoft, it is definitely a Windows 10 / Samba bug though as if you try to quick add from a mapped network share on a Linux based NAS (QNAP in my case) then although the item appears in the quick access list (e.g. S:\Backups) when you click on it
nothing happens. You have to browse the mapped drive, which defeats the purpose of a quick access list!

Please fix this as soon as possible as it is really annoying!

Pin to Quick Access on a Mapped Network Drive

I have not found a solution, but you can get around the problem by not creating the Quick Access from the mapped network drive. Instead, go to NETWORK and drill down to the drive you have mapped, to the folder you want on Quick Access. Then just Right-click
and Add to Quick Access from there instead. That worked for me without issue.

Pin to Quick Access on a Mapped Network Drive

I ran into a problem with adding mapped network drive or a mapped network location to Quick Access.

The named mapped link shortcut is not pinned ...it actually places the directory folder in Quick Access and not the shortcut link.

MAJOR PROBLEM because users are used to behavior of Favorites where you can rename the Favorites link to whatever you desire. However renaming the pinned mapped network location in Quick Access
actually allows users to rename the directory name...modifying the directory paths to all sub-folders under that.

This is especially dangerous for shared network locations as every user trying to access this can change the directory name on the server, causing all other users links to this directory, to break the next time they try to connect. BTW this is exact scenario
that happened to me just today. I had to go in and rename the directory in our server, back to original name to fix this...now i have to train all users to not put mapped network links in Quick Access...and hope they don't forget.

    • Users should NEVER be able to change actual directory names from the Quick Access pinned locations, and should have to go to the actual file location to do this.
    • Also, These pinned location names should be shortcuts that point to the actual directory locations...this will allow users to rename the shortcut to anything they desire while not affecting the directory structure.
Please work on a fix as soon as possible, or at least an interim work around for this, so we can prevent mapped network locations/drives from being pinned to Quick Access, so this can be avoided going forward.
