Windows 10: Badge numbers on small icons in taskbar

I recently changed my taskbar layout and switched to small icons to get more screen real estate. Problem is, while in small mode, icons don't display badges anymore (like unread count for Discord or email apps for example).

I've been looking around but can't find any way to force-enable them on small icons. Is that possible ? I'm currently using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to make the taskbar as thin as possible (I have it set up on the left of my screen) and there doesn't seem to be an option for badges in the app.

Display badges on taskbar icons

How can I change my settings to allow Outlook to show a badge on it's icon (in the taskbar) when I have unread messages? It should show a yellow envelope over the main icon for Outlook. This is different than the icon that can appear in the "notifications" area on the right side of the taskbar.

In Taskbar Settings, I have "Use small taskbar buttons" option turned OFF, and I have "Show badges on taskbar buttons" ON. Last week I had finally found a setting screen that allowed you turn on/off badges for each application individually. After setting it to 'on' for Outlook, these badges began displaying. However, for some reason this setting got reverted when I rebooted, and I can no longer find it.

 

Small icons setting won't change

I suggest that you change or uncheck Use small taskbar buttons by following the steps below:

• Right-click the Taskbar.
• Select Properties.
• In the Taskbar tab make sure that Use small taskbar is
  uncheck.
  
  
  
  
• Click Apply and OK.

If the issue still persists, you can change the size of desktop icons.

• Right-click an empty space on the desktop.
• Select View and choose either Large, Medium or Small icons.
• Check if you can change the size of the taskbar button.

System Icons on taskbar

Are you referring to the clock system icon on the taskbar?

If so, I suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below:

• 
  Click on the search bar on the taskbar.
  
• 
  Type system icons.
  
• 
  Under Turn System Icons ON or OFF, turn On the Clock and check with the issue.
