  1. Next Windows Update check scheduled for 2023

    Hello all,

About a month ago, I built a desktop and installed Windows 10 64 Home on it. It's been running fine up to this point. On Tuesday, however, I decided to pull up Windows Update to see if it had downloaded the monthly patches. It said that my system was up to date, but to my surprise, it showed that the last check for updates had occurred at 7:50 PM on 10/21/2019 -- over three weeks ago, and the day after I built the computer.

I did some digging, and I think I found the culprit. A day or two after I built the computer, I went into the BIOS to check something, and when I booted back into Windows, I found that, for some reason, it had advanced the system time by exactly four years to 2023. I don't know how or why that happened, as I hadn't changed anything in the BIOS, but I reset the date to the proper year and thought nothing more of it.

After realizing there was a problem with Windows Update, however, I eventually thought to look in the Task Scheduler. Under Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/WindowsUpdate, I found the task "Scheduled Start," with "Next Run Time" listed as 10/23/2023 at 5:58:18 PM. Apparently, WU scheduled its next start during the brief time the system clock went haywire.

The problem is, I can't seem to change the task. If I try to edit or delete the trigger, or create a new trigger, I get an error message saying "Task Scheduler service is not available. Task Scheduler will attempt to reconnect to it." A quick check of Services.msc shows Task Scheduler running and set to Automatic, so that message is simply inaccurate. I've read that you can circumvent that error by unchecking "Start only if the following network connection is available" under Conditions, or checking it and selecting "Any connection," but it makes no difference for me. I've tried deleting the task altogether, but rebooting my PC just causes the task to regenerate with the same scheduled run time.

I tried manually checking for updates, and they downloaded and installed fine, but I really want Windows Update to do its thing automatically. I'm using Windows Defender, and I don't want to have to remember to manually update it every day.

Is there any way to get Windows Update back to its proper schedule? As I've said, the computer is less than a month old, so I'm open to doing a complete system reinstall if I have to, but I'd like to make that a last resort. This doesn't really seem like the kind of issue where the best option is to nuke everything and start over.

    Thanks for reading,

    Frank

    :)
