Windows 10: What was new in November 2019 on Google Cloud

November was a cornucopia of Google Cloud news and tips, with new ways for companies to start using the cloud and improve the way they work. We’re thankful this season for all the ways cloud can make everyday work easier, and for all the cool technology that just keeps evolving.

Take this easy path to cloud.

In November, we announced the acquisition of CloudSimple, a company that provides a secure, dedicated environment to run VMware workloads in the cloud. VMware is the company that invented virtualization, a way to use physical computer servers much more efficiently (find a full explanation here). This acquisition will make it easier for businesses running all kinds of applications on VMware, like their finance or HR software, to easily migrate those workloads to Google Cloud.

Try a do-it-yourself cloud kit.

OK, so it’s a bit more complicated than putting together something from IKEA. But our Bare Metal Solution became available at the Next UK conference. When businesses are starting to run applications based in the cloud, there can be some stragglers that are harder to move than others. That may be because of their underlying code, or the fact that they were built before cloud existed. This Bare Metal Solution brings all the tools and network connections that a business needs to start using native Google Cloud services.

We get by with a little help from our … work tools.

At the same conference, we announced new, AI-powered features to help you get through your work day more efficiently. First, fresh updates to Google Docs help you produce error-free work. And second, we announced expanded integrations between the Google Assistant and G Suite. These new features continue G Suite’s mission to help businesses become more productive and to streamline work. Check out details in this post.

Thanks for calling. How can cloud help you?

Our Contact Center AI platform became generally available last month, so companies can personalize their customer support. This is the kind of technology that powers the good experiences you have when you call customer support and are directed through options using your voice. Two features of Contact Center AI, Virtual Agent and Agent Assist (which is now generally available), both improve the customer experience while adding efficiency for the business. Virtual Agent helps provide 24/7 access to immediate, conversational self-service, while Agent Assist helps customer service agents through their work with continuous support in real time.

A networking control center helps IT take charge.

The newly introduced Network Intelligence Center can help those IT teams in charge of a company’s network (yes, that’s a very important job!) monitor across the cloud and in the company’s data centers. Networks involve a lot of moving pieces, and they all have to work together to make sure everything runs smoothly, from delivering emails immediately for employees to providing fast, uninterrupted experiences for customers. The Network Intelligence Center anticipates some of the common challenges that IT teams deal with and helps them do testing and see performance easily.

What was new with Google Cloud in April 2019

Spring was blooming as we welcomed thousands of people to our big annual event: Google Cloud Next ’19. We heard great stories about how customers are growing their businesses with cloud, and we planted the seeds for lots of new ideas and connections. Read on to catch up on Next and what else was new last month with Google Cloud.

We introduced our new cloud service.

Our big news in April, introduced by Sundar on stage at Next ’19, was Anthos, our open cloud platform. Anthos is a way for application developers to cut out the extra time they currently have to spend writing applications. For example, a developer might currently write code for an app running in their data center, and then have to rewrite it to work on another cloud, or in Google Cloud. Anthos lets developers package their code once, then run it across different types of clouds, which will save a ton of time.

There’s a new way to stash data in the cloud.

If you’ve ever had to track down an old email containing important information, you know how suddenly necessary that email becomes, even if you received it years ago. That’s the idea behind archive storage, which is a way for companies to store data for a long time, more cheaply than data they might need to access regularly. At Next ‘19, we announced a new type of cloud storage that will let companies store that data in a way that will let them access it right away if and when they need it. It’s like a digital storage unit, and could be particularly useful for companies that have to store data for legal or compliance reasons.

There are some new ways to crunch the numbers.

One popular way to use Google Cloud is for analyzing data. BigQuery is one of our cloud-based tools for storing data (known as a data warehouse) that can quickly store and analyze huge amounts of data. Companies can learn from the data and get new information that would be slow or difficult to get from traditional, non-cloud data warehouses, helping them make decisions and work more efficiently. These tools are popular and growing—the volume of data analyzed in BigQuery grew by more than 300 percent in the past year. We recently added new features that make it easier to get a company’s data into the cloud, and then to clean it up (by taking out duplicate information, for example) and organize it.

We wished Gmail a happy birthday.

Now that Gmail is 15, it lets you schedule when you send emails and reply to a Google Docs comment directly within an email thread (no more flipping back and forth). Plus, Smart Compose in Gmail is now available in Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.

122 other things happened at Next.

So many new products, features, and customer stories came out of Next ‘19 that we made a list of all 122 announcements from the show. The list starts with new regions coming online—those are new data centers that can help users get faster cloud access—and runs down all kinds of techie news. What was new with Google Cloud in July 2019

July was a month for barbecue, ice cream and sunshine. Here at Google Cloud, we managed to squeeze in some of what we consider cloud computing fireworks, like a supercomputing record and new partner in bringing more storage options to businesses.

The internet, under the sea

It’s easy to imagine all of what we do on the internet as just sort of floating around in the air. But there are actually thick cables under our oceans that carry data around the world, so we can get our email and web search results quickly. Google fully funds some cables, while others are shared. The new Equiano subsea cable will connect Europe and Africa once it’s done. It includes cool technological advances that give this cable 20 times the network capacity of the last one built to serve this region.

G Suite gets even more security features

In Tokyo last month, we hosted another cloud conference where one of the big topics was security and how it works within our products. At the event, we announced that Google’s Advanced Protection Program now works with G Suite, so people whose data is at risk of online attack (think high-level executives) can be protected with help from IT. We also brought IT administrators new auto-alerts in their tools to help them see and prevent risky activity in their company. It’s powered by machine learning models.

Storing files is a big job

File storage enables businesses to store lots of files that users or apps need to access simultaneously. Of course, on a business scale, there can be thousands or millions of these files, so the underlying systems need to be able to handle that volume. Last month we announced that Elastifile is now a part of Google Cloud. Elastifile will be integrated with our Cloud Filestore product. This will help those managing large file systems to scale them quickly.

Cloud beats not-cloud in machine learning benchmark

Cloud TPU Pods are Google’s supercomputers built just for machine learning. They get faster in each generation of hardware—they’re now in v3—and set three new performance records last month in an industry benchmarking exercise. It used to be that this type of speed could only be achieved with on-premises systems, meaning hardware physically located and operated in a data center. Google Cloud is the only provider of public cloud technology that has been able to do these tasks faster than an on-premises system can.

School’s not out for summer, after all

Cloud computing, like most things related to technology, is constantly changing. New concepts and products arrive regularly, and even the most experienced IT pros can learn new things. We offer lots of different classes and certificates, and just added a new class to our Google Cloud course catalog: the Architecting with Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Specialization. It uses both lectures and hands-on labs to demonstrate how Kubernetes works. It’s a new way of organizing and managing all the information that lives in your cloud, so there’s a lot to learn about how it works and how to get started using it.
