    Corrupt RTF file

Unfortunately, a PC mishap caused an .RTF file to become badly corrupted. It is still relatively sizeable, so I would be under the assumption that some content is still there. The size may be due to the number of dodgy lines that are displayed in the file. But what I would like to know is the following.

Does Windows store any previous versions of files in the C: drive?

I am curious as to whether or not it may be possible to somehow navigate to a (possibly hidden) folder that houses these backups, and access it via this method. If Windows did not do a backup of it at the time it was damaged, then it's obviously inaccessible. But as a last resort, is there anywhere in Windows that one can access what would be equivalent to expired previous versions? I am only able to access the files from the previous drive via a USB drive, and only about 30% of the files are actually in good condition. The previous version of Windows (used at the time of the mishap) was Win 7 home premium, and now I have changed to Win 10 basic, or whatever it's called.

Alternatively, is there any avenue available that may be able to restore the content in this text file?

    Thanks in advance

    :)

    rtf. file

    Hi Michelle,

Some documents when saved takes up space due to its components. For us to help you with your concern, we'd like to know if your rtf file has images on it.

Meanwhile, if your rtf file has pure texts, we suggest that you follow the steps below to reduce the size of your rtf file:

    • Compose your rtf file in Microsoft Word.
    • Instead of saving, copy and paste your composition to WordPad. All the formatting is copied over too.
    • Save the document with WordPad, and you'll get a significantly smaller file.

    Let us know the results.

  3. Corrupted file RAR

If the archive has been created using WinRAR, why don't you try WinRAR itself? It has a built-in repair feature for repairing corrupted archive (ZIP as well as RAR). Follow the steps given below:
    • Open WinRAR application in your system.
    • Now click on File tab > Open or simply press Ctrl+O.
    • A small window "Find Archive" will pop up. Locate the corrupt RAR archive from your system directory and select it.
    • Now click Open button.
    • Click Tools tab > Repair archive or simply press Alt+R.
    • Again a small window "Repairing File name.rar" will pop up.
    • Now click Browse to select a location to save the repaired archive.
    • Check the box "Treat the corrupt archive as RAR" and click OK.
    • WinRAR will start repairing of corrupt RAR archive. Once it gets completed click Close.
I hope the above steps will help you repair the corrupted RAR archive.

    Thanks.

    Corrupt RTF file

    RTF file corrupted

From your description, and from the efforts you've undertaken thus far, it appears that your .rtf is definitely corrupted. At this point, you'll probably want to focus your efforts on retrieving as much text as you can and reconstructing your file from that,
    if you can.

You can expand your search for a solution, because .rtf is also a Microsoft Word format. When searching, you can use ...

    repair corrupted Word file

... or similar as a search term.

There are professional companies that try to recover corrupted files, but they're likely to be expensive. One example is
OfficeRecovery. If you're thinking about this, keep your BS detector on 'high' so you only consider legitimate companies.

Here's an educated guess from me: Make a copy of your file and change the file extension of the copy to .wri

This is no time for wagging fingers, but it does bring home the value of making daily backups.

Finally: From time to time I am also unable to create paragraphs in the Microsoft Community. The paragraphs appear in the 'compose' box but they disappear once posted.
