Windows 10: PC suddenly powering down/rebooting when gaming

Over the past few months I've been having issues with my PC when gaming. They are very sporadic so I am unable to find an underlying cause.


The problems first started back in January when I had purchased Middle Earth: Shadow of War on Steam, the game would randomly shut down within 10-15 minutes of gameplay. I thought originally it was the game causing it, but no one had been experiencing similar issues so I assumed my computer was overheating, as a friend had similar issues at the same time on another game. I was able to find out that it was not overheating so I'm unsure what had been causing it, but eventually the problem went away.


I just started playing Halo: Reach (MCC Steam Edition) and have been playing it the last couple of days with no issues. However, within a 10-15 minute span I experienced 2 sudden shutdowns in the middle of a game of invasion, where as yesterday I had played 5-6 in a row with no issues whatsoever. I tried googling the random shutdown issue and ran sfc /scannow in Command Prompt Admin and have some corrupt files that Windows Resource Protection was unable to fix. and also opened Event Viewer. I notice a few errors relating to Kernel, then I have a critical issue around the time it occured saying Kernel-Power: Event ID 41 Task Category (63) where it describes it as "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."


Any ideas on what could be causing this? If I remember correctly, I might have reinstalled windows back in january when the issue first occurred but I'm not 100% sure.

Power troubleshooter.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with power. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Power.

Refer these steps:

Step 2: Change the “Power plans” settings.

A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings (like display, sleep, etc.) that manages how your PC uses power. The power plans you can use depend on the kind of PC you have.

Stuck in Reboot loop after power cut

Before we proceed, I would like you to state which troubleshooting steps have you performed bedsides the mentioned to fix the issue.

As per the description, I suspect that you might be stuck in a reboot loop. I suggest that you perform Power Drain and check if it helps

• Unplug the charger and remove the battery of your laptop, if using a desktop remove the power cord.
• Press and hold the Power button for 30sec
• Plug the charger/power cord and restart system
