Windows 10: Windows 10 Update Errors 0x80073712 and 0x80070002 and 0x8007007e

Hi,

I opened up a thread on this, which unfortunately got locked, so need to follow-up here.

Original thread

Problem definition:

Dell XPS13 9350 (2016)

Windows 10 Home, version 1803

Cannot update to version 1903 (Windows Update) or 1909 (manually)


It took me a while to try out all suggested solutions in the previous thread and everything else I found on the Internet, but unfortunately nothing worked - Windows Update consistently fails at installing the new version anywhere between 40% and 90%. I tried at least 7-8 different approaches, each taking about 30-60mins. Any more ideas to try?


Tried and failed:

1. Regular Windows Update.

2. Windows 10 Update Assistant

3. Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter (seemed to fix some issues with green checkmarks, but no result).

4. Downloaded the latest Microsoft Servicing Stack Update for Win10 x64 v.1803 (Nov. 2019), from Microsoft Update Catalog. It installed a single security update (1 min), restarted, Windows Update still failed.

5. Fix Windows file corruption

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow - consistently failed with

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

Tried again several solutions from here, but none helped to resolve the issue.

6. Reset Windows Update Service

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

7. Manual upgrade with Windows Media Creation Tool 1909

Error 0x8007007e || Error 0x8007007e

My original error code on Windows 10 Update is Error 0x8007007e

Tried the suggested DISM with following errors

 

Error 0x80070002 when trying to update Windows

I have been having issues for months with Windows 10 updates failing due to Error 0x80070002 on my gaming laptop. The full message reads:

2019-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4503286) -Error 0x80070002.

I am currently on version 1803 (OS Build 17134.590) and I'm being told "You're currently running a version of windows that's nearing the end of support. We recommend you update to the most recent version of Windows 10 now to get the latest features and security improvements."

I have followed the instructions on Error Code 0x80070002 Fixed – Eassos Step-by-Step Tutorial but this hasn't resolved the problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?

 

Windows Defender (SCEP 2012) when clicked on Update defenitions throws 0x80070002 error

• Which build of Windows 10 are you using? To know about it, hit
  Start, type Winver and then press
  Enter. You could also press Windows Key + R, type
  Winver into the
  Run dialog and press Enter.
• Aside from trying to update the device, were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue?
• Can you tell us what troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
