Some ALT keys not always working in RDP sessions

This has haunted me for years... help me Some ALT keys not always working in RDP sessions :)

I always use an English version of Windows, but have Danish keyboard layouts. Currently running workstation with Windows 10 1909 and RDP'ing to Server 2019, but it isn't dependent on versions, has happened at least throught all Windows 10 for the last three years.

Once in a while my ALT keys stops or partially stops working on the remote desktop. Right now I can type ALT+7 to get a "{", but I cannot type ALT+0 to get a "}" in the RDP session, but works locally.

In language settings I only have English as display language and in options I have Danish keyboard layout, nothing else - both on my workstation and on the 2019 server.

But I still get the button in the system tray where I can change language and select between "English (Denmark)/Danish layout" and "English (United States)/US Keyboard" in Windows 10.

In Server 2019 it shows "English (United States)/Danish keyboard" and "Danish/Danish keyboard" even though no language packs are installed and the display language is English.

If I reboot or just wait, it'll usually start working normally again.

Maybe I should just start using an English keyboard, not being able to type $, } and other chars drives me crazy when I need to write a PowerShell script.

Am I the only one/does anyone know how to fix?

  3. "g" key sticks in RDP sessions

    Hello,

Lately in the past few days or so we've had multiple users with the same issue. Whenever I enter any RDP session in full-screen mode, the "g" key is stuck. It inputs "g" over and over every 3-4 seconds. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Some ALT keys not always working in RDP sessions

Switch between RDP sessions as fast as possible

Remote desktop client is equipped with alternate keyboard shortcuts to supply common keyboard shortcuts inside your RDP session so you can keep original shortcuts for actions on your desktop. This way, you can still use Alt+Tab to rapidly switch between RDP sessions.

    1. When your RDP session is maximized, press restore button on its blue connection bar (or Ctrl+Alt+Break), so it will leave maximized mode.
    2. Resize the RDP window to maximum size so it fills nearly entire screen. But some areas of your remote desktop will be off-screen so client window becomes scrollable. If you want to avoid the need of scrolling, you have two options, depending on your usage preference:
      • Keeping the same scale of content: lower the resolution of the RDP session screen. (I typically prefer this one.)
      • Keeping the same screen resolution: scale down the remote screen. Right-click title bar of RDP session window when sized as "restored" and in menu, check menu item

        ☑ Smart Sizing.
    3. Press
      • Alt+Tab to switch between RDP sessions. This is what you asked.
      • Alt+PgUp or Alt+PgDn to switch between the tasks in RDP session.
      • Alt+Home to open Start menu in RDP session.
      • Ctrl+Alt+End to press Ctrl+Alt+Del in RDP session

Given how much attention paid Remote Desktop Client developers to create alternate keyboard shortcuts, I would say this is the designed way of using multiple RDP sessions with ease.

▶ Source: MSDN article Remote Desktop Services Shortcut Keys

    • it also lists additional keyboard shortcuts
    • that list from authoritative source is most likely complete so do not expect any other keyboard shortcuts doing some magic

Tip: if you find yourself longer working inside one remote session window, press Ctrl+Alt+Break to bring it full screen and use all standard keyboard shortcuts. Press it again to return it to standard restored size and return all standard keyboard shortcuts back to your Windows. All can be done without grabbing the mouse and clicking icons.
