  1. Windows deletes folders that were on my desktop after an update

Hello everyone, hope you are having a good day.

So on thursday evening I finished my regular shenanigans on my pc and went to bed. When I went to turn the pc it had the "Update and shut down" option because an update was available. Didn't really think anything of it, just another update.

So on friday evening I get back from school and turn on my computer to play something, to make music, do some programming or whatever else i felt like doing. I turned on my computer and, as usual, it took 2 mins for it to get to the desktop (I guess it's a hard drive thing idk) and it was horribly slow at first but then it went back as usual (read: slow). I went on Reddit to find a picture of some old Yugoslav airline poster and clicked "Save as". However I noticed that when I was chosing where to save it, I noticed the explorer was stuck on "Working on it" for quite a while. I clicked on the explorer 300 times like a maniac and it said not responding. I assumed it would be back as normal but it didn't. Soon I noticed my taskbar was not responding and I clicked on it 300 times like a maniac. All of a sudden, the taskbar went missing. Ctrl alt del didn't work, alt f4 didn't work, so I reached for the power button, held it for 5 seconds, and the pc turned off.

I waited 5 secs again until I turned on the pc. When it booted, my lock screen with a custom background was replaced with a default background. I thought nothing of it as it would sometimes do that and it was just a bug. I typed in my password, it was logging in, but it took ages to log in, so I powered it off once again.

Booted it up, same thing, only this time i actually bothered to wait 20 mins to log in. When it eventually did, it took me to a black screen. At first I was pretty scared because I thought I had like a botnet virus on my computer. Did the ctrl alt del thing - nothing. I reached for the power button once more, but I noticed that when I pressed the power button, that prompt with options for Taskbar, and other options popped up.

When I booted the pc again, and the same thing happened, I reaches the power button, and this time I din't hold it for 5 seconds, I just pressed it to see if it would show me the prompt. It did and I selected the Task manager, but alas, it didn't show up. I reached for the power button once more.

Booted up the pc , same thing, but this time I waited if the black screen would go away. Another 10 minutes pass, and it did reach the desktop. But wait a second - something seemed off. VERY off. My background was the default Win10 wallpaper, half my icons and folders were missing from the desktop. They weren't deleted though - I checked in the search bar and they were still there, just not on my desktop. And I thought a restart should probably do the trick. I restarted it normally through the start menu.

Booted it and the lock screen was back to how I set it before the incident. Waited 30 mins to log in and to get to the desktop. When it did, my old background was back and most of my icons were back. Yay! Except - wait a second... My folders with all my music, samples and album art were gone. Typed their names in the search bar - nothing. I was fuming at this point. My computer even stopped reacting to my clicks. Like when I clicked on My Computer, it took 10 minutes to respond. I restarted the computer hoping it was a dumb bug - nope, same thing as last time.

I tried EazeUS recovery, and it did find the files I lost, however they were all over the place and not how I organised them.

Is there a way to get them back how it was previously? I absolutely cannot be bothered to go through a gazillion files to find them and to organize them again. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post, I wanted to give a somewhat detailed explanation in case it would help Windows deletes folders that were on my desktop after an update :p

C windows installer folder - Delete?

He can do symbolic link redirection and move the files in it to a different location. *Wink Windows deletes folders that were on my desktop after an update ;)
Better try it out in a virtual of first. Just a suggestion.

    Like:
First move everything in c:\windows\installer to d:\installercache
    Then delete c:\windows\installer folder
Then type this in command mode as admin
    mklink /d c:\windows\installer d:\installercache

Removing those installer files is a bad idea. it might prevent you from updating or uninstalling apps.

Windows deletes folders that were on my desktop after an update

Unable to delete a folder - Invalid folder name

    Suggestion:
    1. Run chkdsk x: /r to make sure that there's no HD corruption.
x: is the drive containing the folder you want to delete.
    2. Try to delete the folder again. If still does not work, go to step 3.
    3. Download: Download - Linux Mint and create a bootable USB using: Rufus - Create bootable USB
    4. Boot up with Linux Mint and try to delete the folder again.
NOTE: Unlike WinPE. Linux does not have any Windows permission imposed to it so it is easier to delete.
