Windows 10: 'No speakers or headphones plugged in' Sound appears to have failed completely on laptop

The sound on my HP Pavilion laptop has completely gone.

The audio icon on the task bar doesn't display any sound devices, just says 'No speakers or headphones plugged in'. My laptop has built in speakers which should be appearing. This also applies when I plug sound devices in.

Under device manager, I tried updating 'High Definition Audio Device' and its now changed to 'Intel Display (R) Audio' but there has been no functional change. I have also tried deleting the audio driver and restarting my PC still to no result.

Any help is appreicated.

Speakers playing when headphones are plugged in


I have an HP laptop with windows 10. When my headphones are plugged in, the speakers are still playing. When I go to sounds, the only device listed is the speakers. How can I silence the speakers when the headphones are plugged in.

Plug in the headphones. Click on the start icon and start type "sound". Open the sound control panel that appears at the top of the list. Do you have an entry in the list of sound devices that looks like it would be for the headphones?
