windows 10 and very high disk access usage slowing evrything down

I have a Lenova idea pad 510 purchased 2016 running windows 10 from new. Its got really slow and goes to 100% disk usage while just sitting there. So I thought some software that I put on there has messed it up. Not one for half measures I restored the windows 10 from the boot disk. Now I have a virgin system Lenova Ideapad PC and windows 10 and nothing else. Well nothing except the necessary new installation of Mcafee. The problem is the same as before 100 disk usage very quickly. Lenova Microsoft have you messed it up

    :)

    High Disk Usage

Hi all, I'm struggling with finding things to fix my high disk usage. I've spent many months searching the internet and doing all the listed suggestions like disabling SuperFetch, Windows Defender, Updating drivers, ect. and still I'm stuck with a high disk usage. Here's a screen shot I took immediately following a restart and opening up to a new Firefox window.

windows 10 and very high disk access usage slowing evrything down [IMG]

I have noticed Service Host: Local System takes up quite a bit of disk usage and that if I close it and let it open back up all by itself then it immediately makes my disk usage drop into a much more manageable 40-60% usage range. But eventually after a while it maxes out again and I have to close it out again. It's an annoying step just to be able to use my computer.

Also, I have noticed that after working with my mom's computer today, that her disk usage when no programs are running is only like 5%. Makes me wonder why my computer can have no programs running but my disk usage never drops below 30% and sits in the 40-60% range with spikes up over 75%.

I honestly don't know enough about computers to do much more than I already have without causing major issues. BTW, just a couple weeks ago I had to do a Windows reinstall, not a complete reinstall, just the basic reinstall they allow you to do on Windows 10 where you still keep all your personal files. Ever since that a lot of times when I try to open a process like Run or Task Manager I'll get an error message that it can't open and then I do it again and it will open the second time.

Here's a screenshot of my computer information so you can see what I'm working with here.

Rapid Disk Usage Variations on Windows 10.

    Hi Crackers,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community and being part of Widows 10.

As per the description I understand that you are facing issues with access the operating system as it randomly performs slow and becomes slow. We will help you with this issue.

Provide us the below details to assist you better:

    • Do let us know the make and model of your device?
    • Does this issue persists when you place your laptop in Safe mode as well?
    • Is this issue specific while performing and particular task on your device?

I suggest you to try few of the below troubleshooting steps and check if it helps.

First of all, take a note of the processes or applications that is running when the computer runs with high disk usage. Also, we need to find the applications that are running at startup.

step 1: Follow the steps to check for the processes under Task Manager:

    • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Click on Processes tab. Check if any of the processes consumes high memory usage.
Bad sectors on the hard drive can be a cause for high disk usage.

Check which process is utilizing the Hard Disk on Windows 10, you may try the following steps.

    • Open Task Manager and click on
      Details
      tab.

    • Right click the columns headers and click "Select Columns".

    • From the "Select Columns" window, check: I/O Reads, I/O Writes, I/O read bytes, I/O write bytes and then click
      OK.

    • Now the columns will be added to the view and will display how much each process is utilizing from the hard disk.

    • Sort by I/O read bytes or I/O write bytes by clicking on the column header to see which process is utilizing the Hard Drive most.

Step 2: If you have not run the 'check disk' scan or tried optimizing the drive, follow the steps from this article.

Improve performance by optimizing your drive

(Note: This applies to Windows 10 also.)

Important: While performing check disk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive, it tries to repair that sector and any data available on that might be lost.
