Keep ownership of removeable hard drive the same across multiple computers

I use a removeable drive that I carry with me and use it in different computers eg home and work. All systems set up with the same software. I am an Administrator on all systems.

I want to be able to login and have the ownership of the drive and all the folders & files on the drive be the same, regardless of what computer I am working on.

I log in under my Microsoft account - *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

First time I logged in on each system I ran changed Drive permission to INITIALS @outlook.com RAN with “replace owner on subcontainers and objects”.

Also ran "Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object" - for all the Principals shown, which includes *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and SYSTEM and Administrators.

The issue is that when I am at work, there is a principal shown as “Account Unknown S-1-5-21-1725...... “- this represents me logged in on at home as *** Email address is removed for privacy ***.

The exact same thing happens when logged in at home. There is another PRINCIPAL – “Account Unknown S-1-5-21-366708926......” - This represents me when logged in at work.

I can deduce this from creating different files/folders on the home vs work computers.

It is creating problems with the drive – typically I have to run Chkdsk and then retake ownership each time I change computer. It also generates odd problems such as files with the correct name but no info 0 KB size.

I have used this exact same setup system for about 15 years. Problems with ownership/permissions were never encountered until the switch to Windows 10.

It seems to me that I need 1 central owner NOT linked to a specific computer.

For various reasons I cannot just use a OneDrive or a VPN.

    Looking for solutions.

    Thanks

    GJR

    :)

  2. Resetting Computer with Multiple Hard Drives?

    Hey all,

Just a quick question. My computer has three hard drives:

    • An 128GB SSD as C:\ for Windows 10 and essential applications (Visual Studio, Office, etc)
    • An 700GB SSD as D:\ for nonessential applications and games
    • A 2TB platter HDD as E:\ for general file storage.
My computer has been running a bit weird lately (especially since I had a RAM stick go bad about a month ago) and so I just want to reset the C drive. My intention is to use the following steps:

    • Settings > Update & Security > Recovery
    • Click Get Started under Reset this PC
    • Click Remove Everything
    • Erase quicky (since I'm not trading this PC in)
So, my question is, if I do this will it format all three drives or will it only affect my C drive? I just want to know if I should disconnect my E drive before restoring my PC.

    Thanks in advance!

  3. Hard Drive not Showing

    Hi Lori,

    Thank you for posting back.

    • How are you connecting the Hard drive to your computer?
    • Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a different computer and check if it works?

It's possible that your USB drivers are corrupt. I suggest you to try the following steps and check.

    • Press Windows Key +R and type
      devmgmt.msc
      to open Device manager.
    • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
      at the left bottom.
    • Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click on
      Uninstall to remove it.
    • Repeat these steps for the entire USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    • Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.

Keep us posted with the status of the issue to assist you further.

    Thank you.

Resetting Computer with Multiple Hard Drives?

    Hello
    Sn1p3rM00n,

When you're resetting your computer, if you choose remove everything and you have more than 1 drive, you'll be prompt if you would like to remove everything only where Windows is installed or all the drives.

    Something like this.

So you can decide what to do.
