Microsoft in their infinite wisdom doesn't allow gpedit.msc or secpol.msc to run on windows 10 home

So how do you fix things like "Unidentified Network" can't change to "home network".

various other things that would be safer to use the Policy Editor to fix than use regedit

So can someone explain why there isn't a better tool than using regedit

policy editor solutions are designed to be safer than using regedit

    :)

I can't set a slideshow in the Lock Screen and one of the Microsoft suggestions to use gpedit msc didn't work

I can't set up a slideshow for the lock screen. I can select a picture from the computer or I can select one of the Windows 10 standard pictures. If I select slideshow it doesn't change the PREVIEW and when the computer is inactive I get a black screen.

One of the suggestions made by Microsoft in response to this problem in another post was to run gpedit msc. I have tried this or gpedit.msc or gpedit and in all cases the message I get is gpedit or gpedit.msc or gpedit msc "is not recognised as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

How do I fix the lock screen problem or invoke the local group policy editor?

Can't run msc or regedit from start menu search (cortana)

Last edit; had the same problem on 3 different computers (towers and laptop, Home and Pro), everything is back to normal with no intervention.

    Weird...

    Major edit:

Just installed 10586 from scratch, no setting changed at all, installed latest (20.4.1) intel lan driver, reboot: execution of MSC and regedit from Cortana is broken...

    ----------------------Original post--------------------------------------
    Hi,

Since I moved Windows Search folder to another drive, I can't run any msc or regedit from start menu search (cortana) anymore.

No error message, just loading circle on mouse cursor then nothing, consoles don't show in taskmanager either.

However I can run services.msc this way... And Perfmon if I don't add .msc.

Still can run all msc through Win+R.

Index wipe+rebuild, user/search folder wipe, sfc /scannow: no success.

Reinstalled 10 pro from scratch, as soon as I moved search folder and reboot, it breaks again.

I can keep tearing my hair out, I don't understand what's wrong.

    Please help.

    Regards.

Can't run msc or regedit from start menu search (cortana)

    Well...

This time I didn't touch either user files or Windows search, and running msc/regedit from start menu search is broken again.

    The cause is elsewhere.

    Still digging...
