"GETTING MESSAGE "THIS APP CANNOT OPEN - CHECK THE STORE" - *SEE FIX UPDATED BELOW*

But I cannot even open the store -

On January 24, 2020 Windows did an update. After the update all of my microsoft and Xbox apps and store stopped working on my pc. I need OFFICE for my work and cannot access. I get this message for every single app. All of the icons in the windows area are grayed-out as well. I even get this message when I attempted to ask for help directly on this microsoft website. I have been troubleshooting for five hours now and am exhausted from trying every single suggestion offered in forums all across the web, including this microsoft website. Nothing is working. Please, someone help me. I can't get any work done at all. None of my programs are working. *They worked this morning before the update*

I found this on another forum and it worked - only took a couple of minutes

    1. Open Command Prompt as administrator by taking the cursor to the bottom left corner, and right-click to open the WinX menu. Select Command Prompt Admin to open an elevated command prompt.

    2. Type sfc /scannow
    3. Once it is complete, type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.

For more details on SFC Scan and DISM, kindly refer to this link: System file check SFC Scan & DISM
    4. Restart your computer. ****AT THIS POINT, EVERYTHING WORKED FOR ME SO I DID NOT GO ANY FURTHER BUT HERE IS THE REST OF THE ANSWER TO ISSUE***
    5. Open Powershell as admin.
    6. Type Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$$_.InstallLocation\AppXManifest.xml"} and then press Enter. When finished, all tiles will no longer grey out and all apps should now run.

    :)

    Start Menu Apps are Grayed-out

Many of the apps and folders in my Windows 10 Start Menu appear "grayed-out" and I don't know why (see screenshot below).

Some of the apps are from the Windows Store. When I open them, I sometimes (but not always) get an error message that says the app can't open (pictured below). Reinstalling the app from the Store usually fixes this issue. But this only happens with some of the Windows Store apps. Sometimes, they are grayed-out and they open just fine.

Not all of the grayed-out apps are Windows Store apps. Some are just regular Windows programs (for example, "Access 2016" in the screenshot above). Also, some of the folders are grayed-out too (for example, "7-Zip" in the screenshot above). I can still click on them and launch them if they are grayed-out. They are just colored gray instead of the usual white.

The items that it chooses to gray-out seem to change randomly throughout the day. Everything is fine when I first turn on the computer, but they quickly start turning gray as the day goes by.

I've tried the solutions here and here, but they didn't work for me. Most of the sites I've visited seem to be focused on fixing the Windows Store apps in particular, and don't address the broader issue of random items being grayed out.

Some sites suggested doing a Windows reinstall, but that seems like overkill (and it may not solve the root cause).

I tried updating my video card drivers, but that had no effect.

My computer is only a few months old and came with Windows 10 pre-installed.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro version 1703 (OS Build 15063.540)

    Programs not working

In post 26 there were steps listed to fix the operating system corruption.
Are you able to follow them?
In post 29 was the suggested dism repair command.

    "Gray Screen of Death"

    Thanks for your informative post!

I had solved my 2D & gray screen issue using advice posted by erocker (see below)
Mainly it involves creating a profile and putting higher 2D clocks:
