Windows 10: Windows 10 forced an update on my AMD Radeon HD 7970M Video Card which resulted in COMPUTER...

I upgraded to Windows 10, 1909. I cleaned the system. Loaded all new drivers, upgraded everything.. that is except the AMD Radeon HD 7970M drivers, because every driver for the device after 18.12.1.1 is BROKEN. The community has been aware of this issue for years. Microsoft forums have been aware of this issue for YEARS.


Windows 10 spotted my old AMD Radeon HD 7970M with its old driver and decided on its own to force an update to the latest patch level.. and my Computer Froze. It died. Death by Windows Update. Caused by Microsoft.


I'm a bit unhappy... no, actually I'm really annoyed. I was controlling this issue by deliberately NOT UPGRADING TO A BROKEN DRIVER. And my Windows Update forced it to happen. Now my perfectly good GPU on driver 18.12.1.1 is USELESS.


How do I DISABLE PERMANENTLY, like STAKE IN THE HEART DISABLE, the incredibly BROKEN Windows Update; Or at least flag that one BROKEN update so it will NOT break my system.. Again.. and again..

Windows 10 Issue with AMD Radeon HD 7970m, possible failed GPU?

I have the same issue with my Clevo P170EM laptop. It has a Radeon hd 7970M graphics card.

I have tried reinstalling windows several times now and the same thing happens every time:

Model: Clevo P170 EM

OS: Windows 10 64-bit Home Edition

CPU: Intel i7-3610QM 2,3 ghz

RAM: 8 GB

GPU: Radeon HD 7970m / Intel onboard

- I succesfully finish my windows 10 installment.

- When Windows starts to update the graphics driver it freezes, and when I reboot, it goes into a "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" loop.

- I also tried cleaning any installed graphic drivers in safe mode with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and installing the newest driver for the radeon hd 7970M manually. When the driver was installing the computer froze and went into black screen with
no cursor.

Help would be appreciated

I've recently experienced exactly the same problem, with pretty much the same build as originally mentioned:

Model: Sager NP9150 laptop

OS: Windows 10 64-bit

CPU: Intel i7-3840QM 2.80 GHz

RAM: 32 GB

GPU: Radeon HD 7970m / Intel onboard

System is 3 years old, travels and games extensively.

It started happening immediately after a recent Windows update. I too have had the BSOD with the error message 'THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER' several times, but most of the time Windows 10 just completely freezes at the Desktop. I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

I've attempted every possible way of deleting/uninstalling the drivers (incl. Guru3D's tool) and reinstalling. I've tried lots of recent AMD drivers (up to two years old) and the same thing happens with every driver version.

Ultimately, the only solution to get my computer working has been to completely uninstall the 7970m and force Windows to stop updating it, so the driver is never reinstalled. But now I'm left with a computer that can only run on the integrated gfx (Intel
4000), which is not ideal!

Sorry I can't offer anyone any hope out there, but I'm convinced this is a Windows issue and not an AMD driver/hardware issue.
