Windows 10: Blue screen "Battery Low" Locks/shuts down laptop. On restarting, battery is 99%.

I know this type of issue has been raised a lot but the post I found was quite old. I'm hoping someone has found out how to stop this happening. I have replaced the battery because at one stage the battery diagnostic showed the battery to be failing and a friend replaced the hard drive because he said it was working too hard which is why the battery was not charging. There have been multiple problems - ie battery indicator showing the same level all the time - 78%, battery indicator showing "plugged in but not charging". I had MS online reps working on it but they gave up and said it must be hardware but it's not under warranty so nothing they could do.


It's now showing 99% capacity and charging even though the laptop has just shut down. It's quite random - sometime shut down will be after a few minutes of using it, sometimes it's after hours of using it. I've tried a few of the fixes I've found on questions/forums but nothing has solved it yet. I've tried all of the diagnostic tools on the downloaded diagnostic software - everything passes. This is driving me mad.

I've also checked to see whether this laptop is on the list of those with dodgy batteries but it's not HP Envy. I don't want to bin it and find out afterwards that it's something simple or something in the software.

Low Battery Shutdown

My problem is a weird one. I've set "low battery action: none" and "critical battery action: hibernate" on all my power plans. My laptop still sometimes shuts down after low battery notification. Also, hibernate takes a unusually long time. The problem can be that the laptop would not have enough battery left to hibernate, but because I knew that, I increased the low battery and critical battery thresholds. Still same problem occurs. Anyone knows a solution? Increasing the thresholds more?

We suggest that you check if the low battery notification is turned
on. Kindly follow these steps:

• On the search box, type Power Options to see the laptop's power plans.
• Click on Change Plan Settings.
• Click on the Change Advanced Power Settings.
• Scroll down and look for Battery.
• Expand it see Low battery notification, turn it on for both
  On battery and Plugged in.

Laptop with HDMI monitor: shuts down without low-battery warning

I replaced my laptop battery around two years ago because it was not working well any more. The new battery is not the "official" one, and it has a larger capacity. At the beginning, the battery level that Windows reported was not very accurate, but, honestly, I did not monitor it closely because it was not too important to me.

Anyway, although I hardly take my laptop out of my home, I run it from time to time on battery because they told me to do that for the battery's sake (is it true, by the way?). When the laptop uses its own screen, it behaves as expected as the battery level drops: it eventually warns that the battery level is low, and it then hibernates.

The problem is that I am now running the laptop with an HDMI monitor (and the laptop's screen turned off), and Windows 10 looks incapable of doing a decent monitoring of the battery level in this scenario (with the external monitor). As the battery discharges, Windows gives no low-battery warning at all, and it shuts down abruptly. Then, after plugging in the laptop and turning it on, the start is "fresh": the programmes that I was using are not open, Chrome reports un "improper exit", etc. I even have to reconfigure Windows to use the external screen.

Does anyone have any clue about this? Any way to make Windows realise that the battery is running low and it has to hibernate, when using the external monitor instead of the laptop's screen?

Besides that, I would like to ask two extra questions that are in principle related to this:

1) Given that my laptop is staying at home for many months in a row, should I continue running it on battery from time to time? Would this help the battery compared to running it always plugged in?

2) I am using the energy plan "high performance" by default. Is there any way to make Windows automatically choose the "balanced" plan when running on battery? Also, is there much difference between the two plans? Which one should I use by default?
