Older Nook not connecting to computer

I have a Nook simple touch that I have not used in a few years. I'm attempting to update the Nook as well as load books on to it for an upcoming trip. I can not get the computer to recognize the Nook, although it has no problems connecting to other devices like my phone or my external hard drive. I have spent hours this morning reading several ways to fix this and it's not working. I've restarted the computer, I've tried different USB ports, I have uninstalled the drivers, none of it is working. I'm not a super tech-savvy person and don't want to mess up my computer or Nook by trying too many other things. Do you have any other suggestions?

    :)

    Can anyone help, please?
